Subscriptions for 2009 are now due. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE send in your renewal forms BEFORE 31 JANUARY. We have several people wanting to join us, so if you do not renew by 31 January deadline we will presume that you do not wish to continue your membership and we will offer your place to those on the waiting list. Monday 16 February
A visit to the Salisbury Playhouse to see “The Winslow Boy” by Terence Rattigan. Performance starts at 7.30pm. Cost £12.00.
Tuesday 10 March
A return visit to the Mayflower Theatre for a performance by the Welsh National Opera of “The Marriage of Figaro”. Full details are available from John Ewington. The visit is fully booked but you are invited to add your name to the waiting list. The cost is £33.75
Thursday 30 April
A visit to the house and gardens at Chartwell near Westerham in Kent. This was the family home of Sir Winston Churchill from 1924 until the end of his life. It is now a National Trust property. More information and an invitation to book in January.
Thursday 21 May
A visit to Mapledurham House and Watermill, an Elizabethan Manor House beside the Thames near Reading. The visit includes a 45 minute river cruise from Caversham and a cream tea at the Old Manor House Tea Rooms. More information and an invitation to book in February.
Strasbourg Visit 2009
The arrangements in 2008 were cancelled due to the fire in the Euro Tunnel. The visit is now re-scheduled for 20-24 September to include a visit to the European Parliament building.

A Snapshot of a Group
Poetry for Pleasure Group
Only four members joined the group this year and we decided to devote our first meeting to thinking about our future (if any). It seemed possible that there would be no point in carrying on with so small a number. In the event, there was unanimous support (all four of us!) for carrying on. We will continue for the rest of this year broadly as we have in the past, with one hour each session for members to read poems of their choice on a given theme: the second hour will be more flexible and during the first four sessions it will be for members to make a presentation on a poet of their choice, whilst on the fifth and final session this second hour will be left open for general topics, including a discussion on the future.
The group meets on the first Monday of each month at 10.00 am at Derek and Mary Strange’s house at 34 St George’s Road, West Harnham. Brian Taylor
Joint Science and Technology Group
The Green with The Sarum College behind
On November 24, a dozen members of the above group were taken on a Salisbury Cathedral Tower tour by Shirley Reeves. This comprised a view of the inside of the tower with particular reference to the dendrochronolgy (dating of the timbers by taking core samples) and the sarking boards (the material and orientation of the boards that support the pitched roof). We also saw examples of Victorian engineering work to keep the tower square and true and the automatic mechanism for playing the chimes.
We stopped at the top of the square tower and marvelled at the arrangement of ladders required to reach the top of the spire. Despite the cold wind we were able to exit on to the very narrow walkways to see the magnificent views in each of the four compass points. Down again we had a look at the controversial new angels and the font.
