From the Chairman

Dear Friends

We haven’t held a new members Coffee Morning for a while, but from now on we’ll be running them every 3 months starting in April. They will take place at 10.00 am on the second Wednesday of the month at Laverstock Village Hall, Duck Lane, SP1 1RQ. Members who have never attended a new members Coffee Morning are cordially invited to come along to meet other new members and to learn all about the U3A. You’ll get to know the history, the overall organisation and how things are run locally with our Coffee Mornings and activity/study groups. Committee members will be on hand to explain what they do and there will be ample time for questions.

The dates for new members Coffee Mornings for this year are 13 April, 13 July and 12 October. If you would like to attend, please phone me on 01722 504295 or email at gkpardy@hotmail.co.uk or put your name down on the list by the notice board at the March Coffee Morning.

Looking forward to seeing you at Laverstock Hall and don’t forget to wear your name badge!

With best wishes

Gordon Pardy

Striders

We have had good weather on the last 2 walks. In February we walked from Amesbury towards Stonehenge, to Spring Bottom, Normanton, through the meadows and back to Amesbury recreation ground, followed with a huge meal at the Antrobus Arms. The March walk started at Frogham, to Hampton Ridge, into Pitts wood, Godshill, and back to Frogham, and another good meal. Many thanks to the leaders. After lunch 5 ladies went to Blashford Lakes for a spot of bird watching. Just Perfik!

Thursday 7 April

We will start at 10.00 am at Godshill (OS 22 Explorer 186 x 157) in the ASHLEY WALK car park (not the Cricketers park) second on the right after the Fighting Cocks Inn on the B3078. The walk is about 5½ miles.

Please phone Pat on 01722 710308. My mobile is 07732 018781 (which I don’t switch on very often but will on walk days!)

Croquet

The 2011 Croquet season will take place on Wednesdays from 6 April to 28 September inclusive. Please assemble at the croquet ‘lawn’ on the South Wilts Sports Ground near Skew Bridge in Wilton Road from 1.30pm. The cost, payable in cash, is £10 to join for the season and £1 each time you play. We play golf croquet, not association croquet. Coffee, tea and snacks may be purchased from the bar at the Golf Centre and we can use the facilities there.

If you would like to attend as a visitor (once per season) from Sarum Salisbury or Spire U3As, and see if you want to join, please come and pay £1 on the day. Any enquiries please to:

Sarum U3A Outings & Visits

This feature will occupy a regular slot in our newsletter and, if any member would like to contribute, please contact Chris with suggestions. Please be sure to look at the Visits Appendix with this newsletter.

Bletchley Park: A reminder to all those members who have indicated their wish to be included on this visit – by now you should have received the information pack, if not please contact Chris asap. Good news for those on the original ‘waitlist’ – your place is confirmed pending receipt of your Reservation form. Members need to ensure that completed Reservation/Next of Kin forms, with accompanying cheque, are with me by Wednesday 16 March. If you are not able to attend the Coffee Morning, please post it in good time. Thank you.

Highgrove: This trip has proved to be equally popular and we now have just 10 places left. Act quickly or you will miss out!

Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre: The new date for this visit is Monday 9 May. This was revised to enable more time for members to book.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens: I am now taking names for this trip and, depending on interest, we will either have a 29 or a 49 seater coach.

Bletchley Park and Highgrove are now open to Spire and Salisbury U3A members who may like to join us although, as Sarum members have been so keen, additional names for Bletchley are going on a (new) waitlist.
