PROJECT: TREASURE HUNT

HOME
PROJECT INDEX

Using a film of 24 frames.
Plan a circular walk within the vicinity of the class and chose 24 subjects to be photographed. These should cover varied viewpoints and also require the students to use their cameras creatively. Write a clue for each. Given about 1½ hours to complete the project they cannot spend too much time on the clues so keep them fairly obvious.
It should be pointed out that they are expected to use the techniques they have been taught and compose their pictures as they see fit, thus having a varied set of images for reviewing at the following meeting. They are to take only one frame for each clue, no going back another day. (Obviously should they miss one, the numbered clues will tell them and they can search it out at the time)
Sort of subjects we chose:

·A church
·An old wooden door
·A plant, in flower, under a tree
·People visiting the local shop
·Notices inside a phone box
·An interesting window
·River View
·Tiles on an old building
·View of Cathedral Spire

This Project exercised the following skills:

    1. Composing
    2. Close-up work
    3. Moving to improve lighting conditions
    4. Managing reflections
    5. Use of various lenses, if available
    6. Selecting an interesting viewpoint
    7. Filling the frame
This project involved a lot of input on our part but proved to be a popular and successful exercise. Used early on with a group, the discussion at the following meeting was also helpful to us. Each member put out their image for the first clue and was able to appreciate the different approaches by members who, after all, were taking the same subject. In this way all 24 pictures were viewed in turn and each student found the exercise valuable.

An example of a treasure hunt earlier this year in the centre of Salisbury including the Cathedral Close is attached here
