Creating Multi-coloured Text

Here is another variation on making text more interesting by colouring text with many colours.

This idea makes use of locking the transparency of a layer so that when painting over the text the paint does not spill over anywhere else but the text. This is very handy.

This idea is from Jack Casement from his web site http://www.jackcasement.co.uk/free-photoshop-tutorial. We give our thanks to him for allowing anyone to use this technique.

1. Start by making a new sheet by going to File > New.

2. Fill this with black. This is done by going to Edit > Fill. Select Black from the Contents.

3. Try using a fat font such as Impact or my favourite Myriad Pro at 150pt. Make the font colour White.

4. Type in some text such U3A DI.

5. In the layers palette highlight the Text layer and Right click. From the menu pick Simplify Layer.

6. Now lock the layer using small checker board icon.

7. Pick a large soft brush such Chalk or Dry Brush from the default brushes palette.

8. From Window pick Colour Swatches.

9. Choose a bright colour by clicking on one. The Foreground colour should match this.

10. Now paint over the first letter spreading over the second one a bit as well.

11. Choose another colour from the Swatch palette and paint more of the second letter.

12. Repeat using different colours.

13. Try using different Blend modes when painting. Try Exclusion and Dissolve and Colour modes for instance.

14. Good fun and ideal for making Calendars, Cards and the like.
