Chiselbury Grove Strollers

Lower Woodford Valley

Bank Holiday Monday 27th August 2007

A group of ten of us posed and set off in 2 cars to Lower Woodford in the glorious Woodford valley on a sunny warm day. Perfect. The route used is shown below. It is 3.5 miles long with some styles but easy walking.

We parked by 2 on the map and immediately saw some young foals along the track. Later we saw some strange sheep and an encounter with a narrow field exit on to the road we had travelled by car earlier. A permissive path led over a narrow overgrown bridge and then onto the Little Durnford Manor roadway. Here we saw some calves and a fly fisherman in which Bill took an especial interest. He may even join the Salisbury Angling Club!

In the grounds of the Manor we came upon 2 Jerusalem donkeys (so called because they have a dark cross acroos their backs and the story is that Mary rode in to Bethlehem - but see this donkey web site). Then we spotted the Manor House and, further on up the Avenue, the Keepers Cottage.

Then over wide open fields and down to Eddie's seat. Finally some pooh stick competitions on the last bridge over the Avon.

The overgrown footbridge also caused some fun.

Here Pam is marching through and below Tilly and Sheila make the crossing. Below them Maggie and Mandy get across.
