SARUM U3A COURSE INFORMATION 2011-12


APPRECIATION OF TREES IN SALISBURY Initially a survey of trees and locations to produce a photographic record.

ART & ARTISTS (Peter Tee’s group) A look at the life and work of artists through the centuries.

ART & ARTISTS (Sally Jermy’s group)Examination of one artist per session with illustrative videos, DVDs, slides etc. Members choose artists and present their own research.

ART APPRECIATION As above

BASIC FRENCH Uses the book “Voilà” and cassettes. Not suitable for complete beginners.

BIG QUESTIONS An opportunity to discuss issues of mutual concern both topical and timeless.

BIRD WATCHING FOR BEGINNERS An introduction to British birds for those with little or no experience. Sessions take the form of field trips (video presentation if the weather is bad). Members need to be agile and waterproof as there is some rough walking involved. (2nd Mon. if bank Holiday)

BOOK READERS Members choose a book per month for discussion. Books are usually but not always novels, often new paperbacks but sometimes classics.

BRIDGE FOR ENJOYMENT (Jennifer Tyler’s group) ACOL bridge, 3 to 4 tables, approximately 3 hours. Chicago bridge in units of 4 hands, so players mix up. Players need basic knowledge but newcomers and improvers welcome.

BRIDGE FOR PLEASURE (Mary Paisey’s group) Not suitable for beginners. We play Chicago and change partners during the afternoon. A friendly, informal group.

BRUSH UP YOUR FRENCH For those with “O” level. Spoken French predominates but with some grammar and optional homework! A course-book with listening exercises is used.

CHINESE CERAMICS Studying the earthenware and porcelain made in China from prehistoric times to the present day.

CHURCHES & PUBS Visits to look at architecture, social history, epitaphs, unusual and interesting facts and the unexpected. End the morning in a local pub. Car sharing possible.

CHOIR (Joint ) Not a priority choice The U3A choir welcomes all voices. There is no audition. We sing madrigals, folk songs, rounds and John Rutter’s music etc .

CLASSIC FILMS Members choose films they would like to view.

COMPUTING - BEGINNERS(Joint) 6-month beginners’ courses starting in September or mid-February (state preference on form) taught by South Wilts Grammar School staff and coordinated by Salisbury U3A. Limited number of places. Regular weekly attendance is essential.

COMPUTING - INTERMEDIATE The 28 week course is only for those continuing from last year. Notification of inclusion may not be till August. Members are automatically eligible for the Masterclass COMPUTING MASTERCLASS A 12 week course open to all previous students on a first come basis commencing in April 2012.

COUNTRY INNS Visits to country inns to enjoy food and real ales and perhaps learn a little about the history of the inn. Advance booking for each visit essential. Car sharing desirable.

CROQUET Not a priority choice. This is played from April. Contact the group leader immediately if you are interested. (01722 320806) There is a £10 contribution towards hire of facilities, plus £1 per session. The game is golf croquet. A one week trial is available.

CURRENT AFFAIRS Discussion with members contributing to the agenda and discussion.

DABBLING IN CROSSWORDS Doing various types of crosswords from national newspapers or magazines.

DETECTIVE FICTION An opportunity to revisit old favourites and to catch up with new writers. Members take turns to introduce a writer of their choosing.

DIGITAL IMAGING FOR BEGINNERS We start at the beginning. Knowledge of computers is required. We set homework for members. This can all be done by email. Timetables HERE

FAMILY HISTORY Start researching your family history or rekindle the flame! Basic record keeping, discussion forum, sharing success and frustrations and seeking advice. (Jacky MacLeod)

FINE DINING Eating at restaurants of repute from a set price lunch menu around £20. Restaurants include the Clos de Marquis at Stockbridge, Atul Kochhar’s Vatika at Wickham,and Marco Pierre White’s Yewtree at Highclere.

FOREIGN FILM CLUB 1 & 2) Films in the original language with subtitles. Members choose the films.

FRENCH (ADVANCED) Structured conversation for those with fairly fluent AS/AL French. Members prepare material from newspapers, magazines and websites for general discussion.

FRENCH IMPROVERS For those wishing to revive their French- speaking, listening, some writing - using “Rendez-vous”, an up-to-date teaching magazine which can be shared.

GARDENS Members visit gardens and look at their history to gain inspiration from gardens in all seasons. In cooler weather we gather in homes for videos, DVDs, or talks on gardening.

HANDMADE GREETING CARDS Enjoy a fun and rewarding afternoon making cards. Materials all supplied. No experience necessary only enthusiasm.

** HISTORY OF THE EARTH An on-line course. We will start 4,600 million years ago and follow details of major geographic changes and new life forms which appeared including traumatic experiences such as the mass extinctions.

HISTORY OF JAZZ Studying the history of performers and listening to CDs and DVDs.

HISTORY OF VILLAGES Visiting villages researched by Sarum U3A Local History Group last year. Lunch possible.

** INTRODUCTION TO WESTERN PHILOSOPHY The group uses U3A material which they augment with their own research. Continuing from last year.


** KINGS & QUEENS OF ENGLAND An on-line course. Members read each unit and take turns to share their research. The course starts with the Saxon & Danish kings and covers Normans, Plantagenets, Tudors, Stuarts, the House of Hanover right up to George VI.

LIFE CHANGING NOVELS Members take it in turn to present the background and content of a novel which has changed their way of thinking 1st Monday 10.30 Monthly

LOCAL HISTORY RESEARCH focussing on important individuals

MAKE YOUR OWN WEBSITE – for free. The simplest methods of achieving this will be covered.

MATHS An introduction to maths. Solve any problems or difficulties you had at school. Maths made easy by modern methods.

MUSIC APPRECIATION Members present in turn (on a voluntary basis) recorded classical music of their choice – a single composer or a varied selection. Offers of an occasional venue welcome

PAINTING FOR FUN & IMPROVEMENT For beginners & improvers. Tuition including demonstrations given. Preferred medium watercolour but oils, acrylic & pastels may be used. Some outdoor activities in the summer term – weather permitting.

PAINTING FOR PLEASURE For those who enjoy painting in company. Mainly watercolour but other media if you wish. No tuition but a bit of friendly guidance from more skilled members of the group.

PATCHWORK, QUILTING & APPLIQUE Machines available for creating your own designs.

PLAY READING Reading plays of all periods - Greeks to modern. No dramatic skills needed to enjoy this activity! (Joint with Spire.)

POETRY FOR PLEASURE A pro-active group where everyone takes part, reading poetry and studying members’ chosen poets.

** PSYCHOLOGY FOR BEGINNERS An on- line course.This cooperative course is designed to provide an insight into psychological methods to enrich relationships. It uses U3A on-line materials. Members will need access to the internet. Jointly run by Linda Farrow (01722 710599) and Jean McFarlane

RUMMIKUB A simple but fun game for enjoyment.

SCIENCE FORUM All members bring along and share an item of recent scientific news. In the second half members take turns in leading in greater detail about a chosen topic. Any scientific, technical, interested views welcomed. Joint with Salisbury.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY GROUP (Joint) Not a priority choice. Meetings at the Harnham Memorial Hall, Watersmeet Road (near the Grasmere Hotel). Just turn up. £1.

SHAKESPEARE READING GROUP Reading Shakespeare plays in the round but occasionally taking individual parts. We also watch DVDs and organise visits to local theatres.

SHARING NEEDLECRAFTS Sharing ideas, skills and experience whilst working on your own project - sewing, knitting, embroidery.

STITCH AND STICK Come and do any stitch you wish. You may also make cards.

STORY OF SCIENCE FROM 1800 An on-line course. Members study units individually and meet monthly for discussion and to share background research.

STRIDERS Walking 5-6 miles at a brisk pace (2.5 - 3 mph). Members take turns in planning walks. Break half way. Optional pub lunch at end.

STROLLERS Strolls up to 3 miles. Meet at the Hampton Inn , London Road then drive to a pub. A leisurely stroll returning for lunch at the end. Car sharing desirable.

SUNDAY LUNCHES (Joint) Not a priority choice. Meeting the Sunday following the first Monday of the month for Sunday Lunch in local pubs (within 10miles) sharing cars. Phone: Barbara Coulson (710597) or Jean Seabrook (710367) for details, dates and venues.

THEATRE DISCUSSION GROUP We meet to discuss plays seen at the Playhouse and the Arts Centre. Meetings coincide with the Playhouse run and the needs of the group. A rough timetable will be settled at the first meeting.

TRAVEL ABROAD This group provides members with the opportunity to share their travel experiences, usually by talks supported by brochures, photographs, slides, DVDs etc.

WALKING Members take turns in planning and guiding a walk and booking the table for lunch at a pub. (Lunch is optional) Walks are usually 5-6 miles.

WATERCOLOUR (Joint with Spire) The group decides a theme every 2 weeks. Caroline Bradfield a professional artist comes to advise when each theme is completed.

WOODCARVING Hands-on woodcarving using chisels and gouges. 50p extra contribution per session towards materials.

WRITING FOR PLEASURE Writing autobiographies, fiction, articles.
