To apply for these groups for reasons of fairness and insurance, you must be a member of U3A. (Sarum U3A subs are due each January.)
Members must apply afresh for all groups each June (but most are able to continue if they wish). All starting dates should be confirmed with the group leader.
Members pay the leader 50p per session (or more if the leader incurs expenses such as photocopying, hire of hall or materials).
The on-line courses use U3A materials. Members usually enrol as individuals on-line (cost £15). This is very easy and instructions will be provided. You can then sign up for as many courses as you want.
ALTERNATIVE HEALING DISCUSSION Discussing and sampling alternative methods of healing such as reiki, dowsing, dreams and reflexology.
ART & ARTISTS A look at the life and work of artists through the centuries.
ART & ARTISTS Brief presentation on one artist per meeting, illustrated by any visuals available.
BASIC FRENCH Uses the book “Voilà” and cassettes. Not suitable for complete beginners.
BASIC MAP-READING & NAVIGATION FOR WALKERS To enable you to read and interpret an Ordnance Survey map and be able to use it with a compass to navigate a walk.
THE BIG QUESTION An opportunity to discuss issues of mutual concern e.g. The ageing process: Am I old/ Am I young? Members would be invited to lead on a topic which grabs them.
BIRD WATCHING FOR BEGINNERS An introduction to British birds for those with little or no experience. Sessions take the form of field trips (video presentation if the weather is bad). Members need to be agile and waterproof as there is some rough walking involved.
BOOK READERS Members choose a book per month for discussion. Books are usually but not always novels, often new paperbacks but sometimes classics. If members prefer, they may talk about any book they have read recently.
BRIDGE FOR ENJOYMENT ACOL bridge, 3 to 4 tables, approximately 3 hours. Chicago bridge in units of 4 hands, so players mix up. Players need basic knowledge but newcomers and improvers welcome.
BRIDGE FOR PLEASURE A friendly fun afternoon. Not for absolute beginners.
BRUSH UP YOUR FRENCH For those with “O” level. Spoken French predominates but with some grammar and optional homework! A course-book with listening exercises is used.
CHINA FROM MAO TO NOW An untutored on-line course. Members study each unit individually then meet to discuss it and/or present research. Members take turns to lead the meeting. It starts with the Last Dynasty and the First Republic and looks at Mao’s ideologies, three women who played a major part and the land and its people.
CHINESE CERAMICS Studying the earthenware and porcelain made in China from prehistoric times to the present day.
CHOIR (Joint ) The U3A choir welcomes all voices. There is no audition. They sing madrigals, folk songs, rounds and John Rutter’s music etc .
COMPUTING - BEGINNERS(Joint) 6-month beginners’ courses starting in September or mid-February (state preference) taught by South Wilts Grammar School staff and coordinated by Salisbury U3A. Limited number of places. Regular weekly attendance is essential.
COMPUTING - INTERMEDIATE The year-long Intermediate Course is only for those continuing from last year. It may not be possible to notify you if you have been successful until August.
COUNTRY INNS Visits to country inns to enjoy food and real ales and perhaps learn a little about the history of the inn. Advance booking for each visit essential. Car sharing desirable.
CREATIVE WRITING Writing autobiographies, fiction, articles. Fun exercise during the meeting.
CROQUET This is played from April. There is a £10 contribution towards hire of facilities, plus £1 per session. The game is golf croquet. A one week trial is available.
CURRENT AFFAIRS Discussion with members contributing to the agenda and discussion.

EASY LISTENING MUSIC Listening to a wide range of music including jazz, musicals, film, pop etc.- not classical. Choices are made by members of the group who bring along CDs.
ESTABLISHED PAINTERS This is for established artists to support each other and paint regularly. No tutor just mutual support.
FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH Beginners to advanced. Access to internet desirable but not essential. Sharing interests & expertise.
FINE DINING Eating at restaurants of repute from a set price lunch menu around £20. Restaurants include the Clos de Marquis at Stockbridge, Atul Kochhar’s Vatika at Wickham,and Marco Pierre White’s Yewtree at Highclere.
FOREIGN FILM CLUB Films in the original language with subtitles. Members choose the films.
FRENCH (ADVANCED) Structured conversation for those with fairly fluent AS/AL French. Members prepare material from newspapers, magazines and websites for general discussion.
FRENCH IMPROVERS For those wishing to revive their French- speaking, listening, some writing- using “Rendez-vous”, an up-to-date teaching magazine which can be shared.
GARDENING Members visit gardens and look at their history to gain inspiration from gardens in all seasons. In cooler weather we gather in homes for videos, DVDs, or talks on gardening.
HANDMADE GREETING CARDS Enjoy a fun and rewarding afternoon making cards. Materials all supplied. No experience necessary only enthusiasm.
HISTORY OF JAZZ Studying the history of performers and listening to CDs and DVDs.
INTRODUCTION TO WESTERN PHILOSOPHY An untutored on-line course. The course starts with the ancient Greek philosophers: Sophocles, Plato and Aristotle and comes right up to modern times. Each month you have questions to ponder prior to the meeting.
KINGS & QUEENS OF ENGLAND An untutored on-line course. Members read each unit and take turns to share their research. The course starts with the Saxon & Danish kings and covers Normans, Plantagenets Tudors, Stuarts, the House of Hanover and right up to the present.
LOCAL HISTORY Salisbury in the 19th century. Recording individual studies.
LOCAL HISTORY THROUGH LITERARY FIGURES. Looking at history through the works of writers who have or have had connections with the local area. Members present material on one author.
MAH JONG FOR BEGINNERS Learning to play Mah Jong to Association rules.

MUSIC APPRECIATION Members present in turn (on a voluntary basis) recorded classical music of their choice – a single composer or a varied selection
NOVELS FROM ABROAD Members take turns to present material on a novel translated into English.
PAINTING FOR PLEASURE & IMPROVEMENT For beginners & improvers. Tuition including demonstrations given. Preferred medium watercolour but oils, acrylic & pastels may be used. Some outdoor activities in the summer term –weather permitting.
PAINTING FOR PLEASURE For those who enjoy painting in company. Constructive comments and advice from fellow painters. Watercolour is the preferred medium. Some summer outdoor activities may be arranged.
PLAYHOUSE THEATRE DISCUSSION Members arrange to attend Playhouse performances at their own convenience and the group then meets to discuss (criticise?) the production and also to exchange information about other productions. (e.g. Studio, Chichester).
POETRY FOR PLEASURE A pro-active group where everyone takes part, reading poetry and studying members’ chosen poets.
PSYCHOLOGY FOR BEGINNERS This cooperative course is designed to provide an insight into psychological methods to enrich relationships. It uses U3A on-line materials. Members will need access to the internet.
RENAISSANCE An untutored on-line course. The course covers all aspects of the renaissance starting with the artists and considering the Medici, Savonarola, Machiavelli and the whole concept of the renaissance.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY GROUP (Joint) See: Programme here. Talks and discussion on scientific and technological subjects, in non-technical language. No expert scientific knowledge required. Occasional outings.
SHAKESPEARE READING GROUP Reading Shakespeare plays in the round. Possibly also Marlowe.
SHARING NEEDLECRAFTS Sharing ideas, skills and experience whilst working on your own project- sewing, knitting, embroidery.
STRIDERS Walking 5-6 miles at a brisk pace (2.5 - 3 mph). Members take turns in planning walks. Break half way. Optional pub lunch at end.
STROLLERS Strolls up to 3 miles. Meet at Tesco’s car park, drive to a pub, returning for lunch at the end. Car sharing desirable.
SUNDAY LUNCHES (Joint) Meeting the Sunday following the first Monday of the month for Sunday Lunch in local pubs (within 10miles) sharing cars.
TRAVEL ABROAD This group provides members with the opportunity to share their travel experiences, usually by talks supported by photographs, slides, DVDs etc.
WALKING Members take turns in planning walks, usually starting at a pub. Walks are usually 5-6 miles.
WATERCOLOUR (Joint with Spire) The group decides a theme every 3 weeks. A professional artist comes to advise when each theme is completed.
WOODCARVING Hands-on woodcarving using chisels and gouges. 50p extra contribution per session towards materials.
