ART & ARTISTS A look at the life and work of artists through the centuries.
BASIC FRENCH Uses the book “Voilà” and cassettes. Not suitable for complete beginners.

BIBLE STUDY We read the Bible in turn. It is a Christian group and any denomination is welcome. Non Christians also welcome.
BIRD WATCHING FOR BEGINNERS An introduction to British birds for those with little or no experience. Sessions take the form of field trips (video presentation if the weather is bad). Members need to be agile and waterproof as there is some rough walking involved.
BOOK READERS Members choose a book per month for discussion. Books are usually but not always novels, often new paperbacks but sometimes classics. If members prefer, they may talk about any book they have read recently.
BRIDGE FOR ENJOYMENT ACOL bridge, 3 to 4 tables, approximately 3 hours. Chicago bridge in units of 4 hands, so players mix up. Players need basic knowledge but newcomers and improvers welcome.
BRIDGE FOR PLEASURE Members should have a knowledge of ACOL bridge. The group plays Chicago so one plays with a different partner after 4-8 games. A friendly, relaxed afternoon.
BRUSH UP YOUR FRENCH For those with “O” level. Spoken French predominates but with some grammar and optional homework! A course-book with listening exercises is used.
COMPUTING (Joint) 6-month beginners’ courses starting in September or February (state preference) taught by South Wilts Grammar School staff and coordinated by Salisbury U3A. Limited number of places. Regular weekly attendance is essential. The year-long Intermediate Course is only for those continuing from last year. It may not be possible to notify you if you have been successful until August.
COUNTRY INNS Visits to country inns (not town) to enjoy food and real ales, to assess the quality of facilities and perhaps learn a little about the history of the inn. Advance booking for each visit essential. Car sharing desirable.
CROQUET This is played from May. Contact the group leader immediately if you are interested. There is a £10 contribution towards hire of facilities, plus £1 per session. The game is golf croquet NOT association. Not a priority choice.
DABBLING IN CROSSWORDS Doing various types of crosswords from national newspapers or magazines.
CURRENT AFFAIRS A discussion group to look at current affairs, to examine the effects of a particular decision, to look at the alternatives and to hear the arguments for and against.
DIGITAL IMAGING (Joint groups run by Spire) This 8 session course runs every 4 weeks. Enhancing and editing photos creatively on the computer. Taking photos in warmer weather. Called Using Your Camera. For Timetable see HERE
EASY LISTENING MUSIC Listening to a wide range of music including jazz, musicals, film, pop etc.- not classical. Choices are made by members of the group who bring along CDs.
EXPLORING THE SOLAR SYSTEM on the Internet. Members share images withith the group. Not a priority choice. Contact C.Cochrane
FRENCH (ADVANCED) 1 & 2 Structured conversation for those with fairly fluent AS/AL French. Members prepare material from newspapers, magazines and websites for general discussion.
FRENCH IMPROVERS For those wishing to revive their French- speaking, listening, some writing- using “Rendez-vous”, an up-to-date teaching magazine which can be shared.
GARDENING Members visit gardens and look at their history to gain inspiration from gardens in all seasons. In cooler weather we gather in homes for videos, DVDs, or talks on gardening.
HISTORY & TRADITIONS OF SALISBURY VILLAGES – i.e. those focusing on Salisbury for their markets. A self-study group with collective presentations held in members’ homes. Possible outside visits.
JAZZ (New) This group is for those with an interest in traditional jazz and its history. The time of meetings will be decided by the members.
INTRODUCTION TO WESTERN PHILOSOPHY (New)The group will use the untutored U3A on-line course which we will study together.
LITERATURE THROUGH LANDSCAPE Members volunteer to present material on a novel in which landscape (rural or urban) plays a large part .
LOCAL HISTORY THROUGH LITERARY FIGURES. Looking at history through the works of writers from the Salisbury area e.g .Herbert, Trollope, de la Mare & Beaton. Members present material on one author. People who studied Wessex writers should not choose this!

MAKING GREETING CARDS Sharing ideas for making individual greeting cards for all occasions using a variety of decorations.
MATHS A light-hearted look at maths. Solve any problems or difficulties you had at school. This will be maths made easy by modern methods. Up to GCSE level, definitely no harder.
MATHS FOR INTEREST We shall continue to investigate various mathematical topics, usually leading to mathematical patterns, both number work and graphical.
MODERN ARCHITECTURE To take a closer look at new buildings both domestic and public, national and international, in order to understand the concepts behind the designs.
MUSIC APPRECIATION Members present in turn (on a voluntary basis) recorded classical music of their choice – a single composer or a varied selection. Offers of an occasional venue welcome.
PAINTING FOR PLEASURE 1 & 2 Enjoying painting in a continuous programme. Watercolour is the preferred medium. Some summer outdoor activities may be arranged.
PLAYHOUSE THEATRE DISCUSSION Members arrange to attend Playhouse performances at their own convenience and the group then meets to discuss (criticise?) the production and also to exchange information about other productions (e.g. Studio, Chichester)
POETRY FOR PLEASURE A pro-active group where everyone takes part, reading poetry and studying members’ chosen poets.
RENAISSANCE (New)The group will use the untutored U3A on-line course which we will study together.
SARUM STROLLERS Strolls up to 3 miles. Meet at Tesco’s car park, drive to a pub, returning for lunch at the end. Car sharing desirable.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY GROUP (Joint) Not one of the priority choices. Just turn up. £1. Talks and discussion on scientific and technological subjects, in non-technical language. No expert scientific knowledge required. Occasional outings.
SHAKESPEARE READING GROUP Reading Shakespeare plays in the round. Possibly also Marlowe.
SHARING NEEDLECRAFTS Sharing techniques and ideas whilst working on your own project- sewing, knitting, embroidery.
SUNDAY LUNCHES (Joint) Meeting the Sunday following the first Monday of the month for Sunday Lunch in local pubs, sharing cars. Phone Barbara Coulson (710597) or Jean Seabrook (710367) for details, dates and venues. Not a priority choice.
TOWN AND COUNTRY INNS Lunch in pubs in Salisbury and the surrounding villages to sample the pub’s history and hospitality. Ideal for those who prefer to visit pubs with other people. Car-sharing desirable. Advance booking for each pub visit essential.
TRAVEL ABROAD This group provides members with the opportunity to share their travel experiences, usually by talks supported by photographs, slides, DVDs etc.
WALKING Members take turns in planning walks, usually starting at a pub. Walks are usually 5-6 miles.
WATERCOLOUR PAINTING (Joint with Spire) A wide range of subjects chosen. No tutor but an artist advises and comments fortnightly.
WOODCARVING Hands-on woodcarving using chisels and gouges. 50p extra contribution per session towards materials.
WRITING FOR PLEASURE Writing autobiographies, fiction, articles – whatever people choose.
