The monthly Coffee Morning of Sarum U3A was held in our usual venue of St Francis Church Hall on Wednesday 17 December.  This month’s Newsletter gave information about forthcoming theatre visits and visits to historic houses. Tickets were on sale for the New Year Party on 21 January starting at 11.00am.  An appeal was made for a member to take over the job of sending information about our meetings to the Journal and the Library. Our speaker this month was the Chairman of the Churchill Centre, Paul Courtney, speaking about the life of Winston Churchill with special reference to his early life and adventures.  We heard about his family and the time in 1617 when the Winston part of his name came into being through the marriage of John Churchill to Sarah Winston.  The young Winston always had a taste for adventure and spent time finding it in so very many parts of the world; Cuba, Spain, India, Bangalore, the NW Frontier, the Nile, South Africa before going into politics.  Writing, both as a journalist and author, featured in his life and painting entered his life in 1915 during a bout of depression.  Mr Courtney’s talk was well illustrated with photographs of a long and fruitful life culminating in the honour of a state funeral in 1965.     The next meeting is on Wednesday 21January when we will be having a party to celebrate 2009.  Further information on Sarum U3A is in the reference section of the Public Library.
