SARUM UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE

The Speaker at our December meeting was Ruth Newman who spoke about life in Salisbury during the First World War. 

As author of the City and Cathedral Guide "2001 – Salisbury Past", she was able to tell us much about conditions during that War for the families left behind as well as the suffering of the men who went to war. 

The talk was illustrated with photos taken from the records of the Salisbury Journal & Times.  Letters written by the students at Sarum and St. Michael College, and by pupils at Godolphin School, provided more intimate details of family tragedies and everyday life.  No-one was unaware of the horrors, the press becoming a channel for propaganda – morale had to be maintained.

A Salisbury man, Tom Adland, was awarded the VC at the Somme and given a Civic Reception on his return but many young local men lost their lives.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 17 January 2007 and will be our New Year Party, starting at 11am in St. Francis Church Hall.
