Sarum U3A Press Release November 2005
The monthly Coffee Morning of Sarum U3A was held in its usual venue of St Francis Church Hall on Wednesday 16 November. Information about various activities: - the meeting place for the next Sunday Lunch Club gathering; a meeting of the Joint U3A Archaeology Group on 29 November; the U3A Choir singing Carols in the Maltings at 11.00am on Tuesday 20 December; A message from a member who is in hospital giving thanks and appreciation for the support received from other members; congratulations on the success of a book written by Alan Wood on the Postal History of Salisbury now going into a second edition; the availability of a DVD for members who attended the talks in Southampton on Trafalgar; and finally that, with subscriptions for the coming year falling due at the close of 2005, forms for renewal are now being sent to members with a request to return them as soon as possible. Ena Baldock then introduced the morning's speaker, Mr Peter Allanson who has been jointly organising Palmair's Day Trips and City Breaks for the last 10 years. The title of his talk was “A Quick Look around Europe” The next hour and a quarter whizzed by as he verbally toured his audience through 14 countries in or near Europe from Egypt to Estonia and Istanbul to Iceland and almost everywhere in between. His talk was illustrated with wonderful photographs, which both captured the atmosphere of places and fostered a desire to make a visit in the future. There were descriptions of interesting and unusual architecture and breathtaking scenery. Walled cities with decorated cathedrals and basilicas, mountains, coastlines, rivers, harbours and gardens all featured in the photographs. Places you've heard of, never been to, but always wanted to. Places you've not thought of going to, but now want to. When Mr Allanson asked “Shall I do another 10 minutes?” There was an enthusiastic and unanimous “Yes” from the audience. No greater compliment to any speaker.
