| Sarum U3A Wednesday 15th October 2003 The sun generally smiles upon Sarum U3A Coffee Mornings at St Francis Church Hall, the October meeting was no exception and the numbers attending were well up to expectation. In spite of the buzz of conversation and the clattering of coffee cups the Chairman brought the meeting to order at 1030. She began saying that members may be interested in attending a number of activities posted on the board, including lectures by the Medical Research Council specifically for the U3A, a study day at Gosport, a Jazz conference at Reading, Summer School next July at Cheltenham And U3A Online courses in January. The Secretary reminded members that on Wednesday 10 December Jan Truckle will give a half day course on Flower Arranging. Those wishing to participate should ring Jan (325773) to let her know they would be attending. Also members who would like to enter the Sarum Photography Competition that will take place on Saturday 1 November should send their entries to Jim Hopkinson at 93 Castle Road Salisbury SP1 3RP. Members attending the November U3A Coffee Morning will be able to view the photographs entered and winners will receive their prizes. The Secretary Phyl Mullins spoke enthusiastically of the recent Art Study Day at the Southampton Art Gallery. Sixty members of U3A Groups from the Central South Region attended. It was a hugely enlightening and instructive day out. She thoroughly recommended the event and urged members to take advantage of future opportunities to visit the Art Gallery, to admire the wonderful variety of artwork displayed, and take advantage of the expert information provided by the guides. Peter Tee spoke of the Salisbury U3A Choir, saying new members would be made very welcome, and made a special plea in reference to the desperate shortage of men. This announcement will of course come as no surprise to the Ladies who make and dispense the coffee at our monthly meetings, they too desperately seek men….to help make coffee that is. Our Speaker was Pat Sheppard the Head Guide at Braemore House, a magnificent country house near Fordingbridge on the edge of the New Forest. She gave a brief but very informative talk on the history of the house and of the families who lived there. Indeed, the descendants of Sir Edward Hulse , Baronet, M.D., Physician in Ordinary at the court of Queen Anne, George I, GeorgeII, live there still . The house built in1583 and restored and renovated in the late 16th Century, has many fine collections, works of art, and much else of historical interest. |
