Sarum U3A Chairman, Peter Tee, welcomed members to the September coffee morning at St Francis Church Hall and wished everyone well with their chosen U3A endeavours for the year ahead. NOTICES: The Joint Salisbury U3A Healthcare Research Group will be meeting on 14 October at 2 p.m. at the Harnham Memorial Hall. The Chief Executive of Salisbury Hospitals Trust will be answering questions on the future plans for Foundation status for the hospital. The Mayor of Salisbury, Patrick Paisley, is holding a meeting at St Francis Hall on 4 October at 7.30 p.m. to discuss the prospects of twinning with the German town of Xanten. All are welcome to attend. Our speaker for the day was past Chairman, Miss Phyl Babb. Earlier in the year she spent a month touring S. India, coast to coast, with a small coach party of travellers led by 2 very experienced guides; one a former lecturer in social studies at Southampton University and the other an Indian specialist in plants and Hinduism, with a passion for preserving his country's wildlife. Finally, Alan Wood gave a brief outline of how, in 2001, he and 5 members of our U3A undertook to research the History of Salisbury Postal Services. The results have now been published with the aid of a grant from the British Philatelic Trust. The Trust asked that a copy of the booklet be sent to every U3A in the country with the suggestion that U3As might follow this initiative and do similar research. The booklets are selling well locally. Alan and his fellow researchers were congratulated on their achievement by our Chairman. |
