Pat Reed, our speakers’ secretary, must be congratulated for inviting Sue Dewey to our August meeting. Sue’s interest in the North American Plains Indians began at the age of 13. The plains of Montana, Wyoming and North and South Dakota became home to the Sioux Indians and it is amongst the largest of their group, the Lakota or Teton people that she has lived and made friends. Sue’s fascinating talk was illustrated by a fine display of artefacts, including war bonnets, buckskin suits, breast plates, dancing shawls, moccasins and a pow wow headdress. These helped to give us an insight into the traditions and skills of the Teton people. A well organised society where each individual and animal is respected and plays its part, where Elders pass on their history in story and great deeds are remembered in song and dance. This was a talk which will certainly encourage us to delve deeper into Plains Indian culture. Our Chairman, Gordon Pardy, told us that on this day, August 18th, seventy years ago, the one V C awarded to fighter pilots in World War 11, was won by Flt Lt James Nicolson, based at Boscombe Down. In his burning Hurricane, he chased and shot down an Me 110 over the skies of Wiltshire. Vacancies for Spire, Sarum and Salisbury U3A courses have been circulated.
