| Following the socialising time over
coffee and biscuits at the start of
the August Coffee Morning members were reminded of the variety of
activities outside study groups – the deadline for entries to the
photographic competition (categories: action, architecture, landscapes,
portraits) is 31 October; the Architecture day on 21 October; and
coordination with the Salisbury U3A on an outing on 16 September to
London or Kew Gardens and the opportunity to join some of their groups. The morning's talk was given by Alan Corkhill, the Theatre Manager of Salisbury Playhouse. He gave an interesting and amusing account of the work of the various departments involved in putting on a show including the Artistic Director who, in addition to drawing up the list of plays which we see in the theatre's twice yearly leaflets has to find producers, directors, and choose the right actors for each role. The Artistic director also has to organise a Set Designer who starts work on the set 6 months before the play goes before the public. Mr Corkhill also described the vital role played by the Lighting Designers who have to computerise the lighting and the Wardrobe department who, when there is nothing suitable in store, either have to make or hire the costumes. Last but not least Stage Management who provide all the props, including the furniture and any food and drink consumed on stage. In this respect gifts from local supermarkets and loans from members of the public were greatly appreciated and acknowledged by 2 free tickets. Mr Corkhill also talked about the acting rehearsals and the final activities in the last week before the first night. Mr Corkhill was thanked by Ms Phyl Babb and members left the Coffee Morning not only having had an enjoyable time but more aware and appreciative of all that went on behind the scenes to create enjoyable visits to the Playhouse for audiences. The next Coffee Morning will be held at St Francis Church Hall on 15 September and new members are welcome to come along or contact Mrs Phyll Mullins on 01722 322570. |
