The monthly Coffee Morning of Sarum U3A was held in our usual venue of St Francis Church Hall on Wednesday 21June.
The monthly Newsletter, which is circulated to every member, contained information about choosing and joining the groups for the coming year.  This time there are 43 groups to choose from.  Announcements about activities of the “Walkers”, the Painting group, an outing arranged by the “Bookreaders” were made along with information about ordering Diaries and the availability of the U3A News.  Helpers are needed to make coffee at Coffee Mornings and a replacement for Mary who is at present leading the helpers is also needed.  Bryan explained that Gift Aid forms would be available at next month’s Coffee Morning.
The main business of the morning – our speaker, John Hook, for 24 years a Clerk to a High Court Judge – was introduced by Ena who arranges all our speakers.
He started by telling of his own minor brushes with the law and outlined the various layers of the legal system before going on to describe his time looking after a member of the Judiciary in the most amusing terms.  He had a funny story relating to every part of the legal process.  He refuted the popular idea of judges being out of touch with real life and went on to say how unreal was the life of a judge as portrayed in the TV programme Judge John Deed.  By the end of the talk members were not only much better informed about court procedure and the responsibilities of a Clerk but went away smiling to themselves remembering one of  the stories they had heard.
Jim Watkinson gave the vote of thanks and the final applause showed members appreciation for a informative and entertaining morning.
The next meeting is on 19 July at our usual venue when the speaker will be Richard Munroe on “The Mission Aviation Fellowship – Medical and Spiritual Help”.
