Chairman Gordon Pardy welcomed members to our May coffee morning with his interesting historical tit-bits. On this day, May 18th 1919, Margaret Hookham – later Margot Fonteyn, was born. And a year later Karol Jozef Wojtyla, Pope John Paul 11. How appropriate that Gordon should mention two such inspiring personalities as this was a meeting to inspire and encourage members to form and lead new groups. We received next years’ list of options, which included more opportunities for our growing membership. Linda Farrow, co-oordinator, explained that members should put their choices in order of preference and return them at the June coffee morning.
During coffee we had the opportunity to admire the diversity and skills of our members. Art, needlecraft, handmade greeting cards, and historical research, were just some of the items on display.
We watched a DVD showing leaders from U3A groups around the country. It showed the many ways groups can be organised and what fun it can be. There is such an amount of information and support available. This was followed by short talks from our own leaders of groups including poetry reading, Shakespeare play reading, French, digital imaging, rimmikub, science and technology, novels in translation, and bird-watching. It was a morning full of enthusiasm, motivation, fun, and achievement. It showed what a successful organisation that U3A is, and what a vibrant member Sarum U3A is.
