The April meeting of Sarum U3A at St Francis Church Hall departed from its more usual format. In place of the business of the U3A and announcements of activities and so forth, we first of all listened in delight to Elizabeth Dodd at the piano, a member of Sarum U3A, who played various pieces from the works of Scarlatti, Schubert and other well-known composers. Her audience was captivated. Before proceeding to the main business of the morning the Chairman spoke of the combined Salisbury and Sarum U3A Choir and the desperate shortage of men. So, any baritones, tenors etc who would like to join the ladies of the choir can be assured of a warm welcome. The Secretary Phyll Mullins asked members who required a 2004 U3A Diary to get their bids in early to avoid disappointment. Peter Tee said he would again be leading a French language group for the more advanced French speakers in the autumn. He will also be running a musical appreciation group. The main business of the morning was devoted to the administration and organisation of groups/courses, and was conducted by our new Course Organiser Jean Lunnon who spoke of the need for more Group Leaders. She suggested that members who had a particular interest in a subject or activity might consider starting and leading a group, to be certain their special interest was catered for. There were now 40 Groups and the variety of activities and studies available to members are many. From Architecture to Walking, and from Bridge to Watercolour Painting, although in spite of the large number courses available to members, there is still a need for History and English Literature Groups. Forms listing course options would shortly be available for members to indicate their preferences when courses commenced after the summer break Several Group Leaders were then introduced and each gave a brief talk on their own experience of setting up a Group and encouraging other members to follow their lead. Enthusiasm was the main requirement. As one Group Leader pointed out to general agreement, Group Meetings were a very enjoyable social occasion apart from the benefits of learning. Afterwards Elizabeth Dodd again played several classical pieces and was very warmly applauded by a most appreciative audience. |
