SARUM U3A

We were pleased to welcome the Chairmen of Salisbury and Spire U3A’s to our AGM.
Our Chairman’s Report reflected a very successful year in which the membership had increased, as had the number of activity groups, and participation of members. Jenny Mawer (Chairman) thanked all members for contributing to our success. The Treasurer’s Report was accepted, and a new Committee for 2013/14 elected. This was followed by the presentation to Phyll Babb of a framed certificate commemorating her inclusion on the  U3A National Roll of Honour for services nationally and locally.
We were then transported to another world, courtesy of our Speaker of the month, John Bowman. This was the wonderful country of Oman, where John had lived and worked for eleven years. His talk was a tour de force which encompassed Oman’s history, religion, and geography. This was not done in a  textbookish way, but told with the aid of delightful photographs, personal experiences, and chosen extracts from writers and explorers. We learned of the varied landscape, of the soaring mountains and rugged, picturesque coastline where green turtles nest on isolated sandy beaches. We saw shimmering sand-dunes empty of people, wadis with turquoise pools and waterfalls; the famous racing camels and orchards of frankincense; striking fortresses and ruined cities waiting to be excavated. An oil extraction plant and a new Chinese-built oil terminal served as another facet of this friendly, fascinating country, Oman.
