SARUM U3A

Sarum U3A’s combined New Year Party and 18th Anniversary Celebration was held on the 18th January at St Francis Church, which had been laid out with tables and chairs for the occasion.

Our Chairman welcomed members, regaling them with numerous snippets of events on this day in history. These ranged from such diverse subjects as the 1943 wartime ban of sliced bread in the United States, aimed at reducing bakeries’ demands for metal replacement parts; to the 1991 closest recorded approach of an asteroid to Earth at 105,700 miles; to the birth of Hollywood star Cary Grant in Bristol in 1904.

Then it was time for our entertainment, the popular local barbershop choir, the Ali Barbers. Still going strong after 37 years, they raise funds for many charities, this year’s donations for their performance going to Canine Partners. They soon had us singing along to some old favourites and laughing at their humorous verse and monologues. All too soon their set was over and it was time to tuck into a delicious buffet lunch and socialise with friends. A perfect end to an enjoyable morning.
