SARUM U 3 A
Press Report January 2005

Sarum U3A's New Year Party was held at our usual coffee morning venue of St Francis Church Hall on January 15th. On arrival members took part in a “Who am I?” activity in which everyone was given a famous persona which they had to discover by asking other people questions. The hubbub of voices showed clearly how many conversations were taking place. It was an activity which encouraged the making of new friends and was clearly enjoyed by the 120 or so members taking part. Thanks is due to Jean Lunnon for her excellent organisation.

Before moving on to the musical entertainment of the morning the Chairman, Peter Tee, drew members attention to the dates for the Archaeology group organised by Anne Boutell on the notice board. There was also a display of the photographs taken at the 10
th birthday party in November.

The Handbell Ringers from the Salisbury U3A branch, led by Tom Coombs, gave a recital of a variety of pieces ranging from an Austrian Folksong to a piece from a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Each excellently performed piece was warmly applauded. The ability of the ringers to ring two different bells held in the same hand was widely marvelled at. Peter Tee thanked Tom and his team, Judith Coombs, Barbara Coulson, Isobel Rider and Muriel Dagg for a performance which was much enjoyed by everyone.

Members then moved chairs into circles in order to sit and talk over the wonderful food and drink which had been so attractively laid out. It rounded off a congenial morning and certainly made a most enjoyable start to the group's New Year activities.

Events like this can only be held thanks to the hard work of various members who give up their time to make the preparations and members would like to express their gratitude to them. As usual Mary Cole and her helpers Frances Lovell, Di Swallowfield, Gwen Oakes and Libby Mumford had prepared somedelicious food which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Peter and Joan Tee helped by Tony Baldock organised and served the drinks.

Our next coffee morning will be on February 16th at 10.30am at St Francis Church Hall when the speaker will be Janice Saunders (a volunteer for “Share”) who will be telling us about her work offering health care to poor villagers in Romania.

New members are warmly welcomed and enquiries can be made to the Membership Secretary on 01722 322570
