Membership

Thank you to the 102 members who have renewed their subscriptions. December is a busy time and I would welcome further renewals as soon as possible.

We have a vacancy on the committee for a replacement for Barbara Prince who is  retiring at the AGM in March next year. Barbara has been in charge of the Registry for many years and we now need someone to take over the reins. The work involved at the monthly meeting is simply to keep a record of the members present for Health and Safety purposes and to welcome new people.  Full training will be given and no prior experience is necessary!
If you would like to help with this small but essential task please let me or any member of the committee know as soon as possible. If you would like to know more I am sure Barbara would be only too happy to answer any questions.

We have had requests for several new groups. These could start any time or, most likely, at the start of next year. Please sign up (on sheet at the rear of the hall or telephone Linda on 710599) so that we can see if there would be support for these groups. 
Keep Fit (probably starting very soon), Philosophy, Village Visits, Meteorology (material available) or Visiting Churches.

Suggestions for other new groups would be very welcome. If you would be interested in organising or coordinating a group, please talk to me about it. The committee will be glad to help.
One of our members has recently studied an online course on Chinese history using U3A materials and is about to embark on one on the Renaissance.  How about investigating the options available and setting up a group to study collaboratively?

Keep Fit
At the end of the Coffee Morning on December 17, Shelia Wills will be demonstrating her exercise routines in the smaller room at the side of the hall. Please stay to watch and join in. If enough people are interested we will form a Keep Fit group.

Bus Routes
A “Connect 2” booking to Stourhead Gardens can be made on 08456 525255 (Option 2). Give 24 hours notice if possible. You will be picked up and delivered back to Hindon in a minibus, connecting with the 25 bus from and to Salisbury and all free on your bus pass.

Archaeology

“Aileen Fox”,  a talk by Margaret McKenzie
about the life and work of this eminent archaeologist, especially her comparison of British Iron Age Forts and New Zealand Maori Pas. All talks are at Harnham Memorial Hall. Please contact Margaret McKenzie (714685).

Wednesday 17 December at 10.00am

To celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Armistice, the speaker for December is Paul Courtenay from The Churchill Centre United Kingdom. He is talking on the “Thoughts and Adventures of the young Winston Churchill”.

New Year’s Party 21 January at 10.00 am

Tickets, £4.50 each, will be on sale at the November and December Coffee Mornings.

Monday 16 February
A visit to the Salisbury Playhouse to see “The Winslow Boy” by Terence Rattigan. Performance starts at 7.30pm. Cost £12.00.

Tuesday 10 March
A return visit to the Mayflower Theatre for a performance by the Welsh National Opera of “The Marriage of Figaro.  The cost is £33.75.

Monday 13-16 August
A visit to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo for a cost of about £525pp including air travel from local airports and three nights half board in a good 3* hotel outside Edinburgh. There will be included city sight seeing, a visit to the Royal Yacht Brittania, an excursion to Loch Lomond and the best available seat at the Tattoo.

The photograph shows Alan Wood manning the Painting for Pleasure Group’s stall in the Scout hut at the Harnham fete.  During the year, over fifty paintings have been sold, their highest number yet!

There will be an exhibition of the Group’s work at the November coffee morning. All items on display will be for sale at prices between £10 and £20.


This year the local History Group will be researching the history of Salisbury’s Chequers. The first meeting was a walk round some of the eastern Chequers with a Blue Badge Guide, Pat Sheppard.  She was able to tell us about the history of some interesting buildings and some stories about people who had lived and worked there and contributed to the life and prosperity of Salisbury. We were all motivated to find out more.
