From the Chairman
Dear Friends
The latest information I have on St Francis Hall is as follows; it seems likely that part of the building could be back in use by Christmas, but the main hall that we use will be out of action for longer. Paul Taylor, the vicar, is keen that all users will be accommodated and has agreed we can use the church for our Coffee Mornings for the whole period the hall is being rebuilt. The fire started at the back of the hall caused by an electrical fault but our sound equipment and notice board, being stored by the foyer, were unscathed apart from smelling of smoke. A small area of the car park has been fenced off to accommodate a Portakabin and some skips, so there will be some reduction in capacity,
A vacancy has arisen on the Committee for a Speakers Secretary to organise speakers for our Coffee Mornings from January 2012. This is a grand opportunity to work with intelligent and articulate people, experts in their field – and book speakers! If this challenge appeals to you, please come and see me at the Coffee Morning or phone on 01722 504295.

Thursday 4 August
Please meet at Longridge, Church Street, Winterbourne Stoke, SP3 4SU at 10 am, the home of Elizabeth and John Summerhayes. The walk will be approx 5 miles around Winterbourne Stoke and Berwick St James in the Till valley. Lunch will be a picnic at Longridge [a BBQ if the weather is good]. Please phone John 01980 620737 to confirm your attendance by 1 August.
Winterbourne Stoke is on the A 303 some 3 miles west of Stonehenge. Longridge is a bungalow opposite the church. From A303 turn south opposite The Bell Inn into Church Street [ a no through road] continue south for ¼ mile. The church is on you left and Longridge on your right with a large gravel forecourt.
Walking Group
We now have a full programme –a walk of about 5 miles lead by our members on the last Thursday of each month, including August but not December.
Thursday 28 July
Please meet in the car park of the Black Horse pub in Hurdcott [Ex130/GR SU 170 337] ready to walk at 10.00 for about 4.5 miles. We take village paths around Winterbourne Earls and then a gentle climb up to Figsbury Ring. There we can stop to admire the wonderful views across to Old Sarum and lovely summer flowers, before returning for an optional pub lunch. Please park in the road nearby if you are not stopping for lunch.

Programmes of Groups for 2011-12
THE ROMANS
This is a late addition to the group list for 2011/12, based on the U3A online course, to be held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2pm starting on 18 October. The topics to be covered include: Myths and Legends about Rome’s Origins, Development and Expansion, Augustus Caesar, The development and decline of the Western Empire, Social Structure and Life in the city of Rome, Development of the Empire, The Romans in Britain, The Roman Heritage. There will also be opportunities for site visits to, for example, Fishbourne Roman Palace and Rockbourne Roman villa.

The Notice Board survived the fire and is now located near to the font in St Francis Church. There are many interesting activities and information about joint events displayed each month so do please check them out.

Sarum U3A Visits
STOP PRESS!! We have 2 places available for our Somerset Levels visit this Friday [yes, Friday of this week] – if you would like to take them up, please ring me quickly.
- Some members have mistaken the Wilton coach stop as the Park &Ride in The Avenue, Wilton. Please note unless advised to the contrary, we use the Michael Herbert Hall car park in South Street, not the Park & Ride.
- Emergency Cards: these have been purchased by Sarum U3A and we have sufficient for each member. The cards are wallet-size and there is enough space for 2 emergency contacts names/numbers. Come to the Visits Desk to pick up yours.
- U3A lapel badges: available for the small amount of £1 each. Come to the Visits Desk to buy!
- At last month’s Coffee Morning, a red mackintosh with hood, size 8 was left in the church. Would the owner like to come to the Visits Desk to claim please!
EXCITING NEWS!!
Salisbury U3A has recently booked a trip to Buckingham Palace which was ‘sold out’ immediately and therefore Sarum U3A members were unable to join the trip.
However, at the request of several of our members I have agreed to run our own visit and this has been reserved with Buckingham Palace for Friday 30 September.
Please either phone me or see me at the Coffee Morning on 20 July to learn more about our plans for the day [you may well be surprised!] I would suggest that you do not delay in putting your name down, as we may well also sell out quickly!
OLYMPIC VENUE visit – Thursday 16 September
This visit includes so much more than the Olympic site so please do ask me for details. We will be accompanied by a very experienced Blue Badge guide for the entire day which promises to be really enjoyable – and educational! We have 10 places left so don’t miss out.
ABBOTSBURY Sub-Tropical Gardens – Monday 17 October
This afternoon and evening visit is a super event with the lights being switched on as dusk falls. Abbotsbury call this ‘magical’ and you can be part of it if you wish to take up 1 [or 2] of the 8 places left.
HIGHGROVE GARDENS
Please would everybody who is coming to Highgrove on the 23 August, see me at the July Coffee Morning, or alternatively telephone me as a matter of priority. This is to do with the lunch menu which, as is normal, we have been asked to pre-order. I should have the Menu by this coming weekend [16/17 July].

Salisbury Museum – Shared Learning Project |
Salisbury Musuem is planning to redevelop its Early Man and Pitt Rivers Galleries which have little changed since the early 1980s. Director Adrian Green is proposing a Shared Learning Project with the 3 Salisbury U3As. [see appendix] .There is an induction meeting on Friday 9 September [1pm -5pm]
We will be shown the library and given guidance on research methods, useful websites etc. Afterwards those wishing to sign up to the project [15 max] will choose working methods and have monthly meetings with museum staff on Fridays at the museum [dates tbd]
