U3A STUDY DAY AT SOUTHAMPTON ART GALLERY

Sixty members from the numerous U3As in the South Central Region came with an open mind, prepared to meet the challenge of Modern Art at a Study Day at Southampton Art Gallery.
The morning began with an account by Ester Mion-Jones, Exhibition Marketing Manager, of the acquisition of the gallery's collection. She paid tribute to the benefactors who, in the past, had bequeathed their private collections, and to successive Curators who have maintained the policy of buying paintings of recognisable merit, often by unknown artists. The resulting collection is now of great value and a significant teaching aid as it reflects virtually the whole history of western art.
Adrian Hunt, her Assistant, invited us to share his enjoyment of Modern Art by describing a travelling exhibition of 'Beck's Futures' which he helped set up in the gallery. It includes Videos which demonstrate that art may be a sequence of events, for example of a man attempting to climb a wall. Having watched many examples from wandering around Beck's Futures some of us found it too great a leap of faith!
We then toured the main galleries, appreciating with greater understanding the superb collection of paintings and sculpture.
Art on view changes every nine months as reserve items are displayed and paintings on loan from other galleries are returned. We will look forward to further visits now that we have attained a better understanding and some insight into the knotty problem of Modern Art.
