From the Chairman: First Edition- “The History of Salisbury's Postal Service” Our congratulations to Alan Wood and his group, who in 2001, researched the history of Salisbury's postal services. The results of the research by the group that consisted of Joan Cousens, Nancy Ellwoood, Yvonne Hardman, Jim Hopkinson and Jeremy Martin, have now been published with the aid of a grant from the British Philatelic Trust; and a copy of the booklet is being sent to every U3A in the country, by Central Office of U3A in London, with the suggestion that other U3As might follow this initiative and do similar research. Spire and Salisbury U3A Groups
Although Spire U3A does not have a list of specific vacancies, they have provided us with a copy of their programme, which will be displayed at our Coffee Morning from September onwards. If any Sarum member would like to join a Spire group, they should telephone the Tutor concerned directly to see whether there is a vacancy or a waiting list.
Members wishing to join a group on the Salisbury U3A vacancy list (also displayed at our Coffee Mornings and printed in the August Newsletter) should telephone the Salisbury overall Groups Organiser on 335223.
Town and Country Inns
The second outing of the season for the two groups will take place on Thursday 20 October from 12 noon. Group A will be visiting the Chough (330032) in Blue Boar Row, Salisbury. Book with Jim on 332263 by Tuesday 18 October.
Group B will be visiting the Boot Inn at Berwick St. James (790243). The no.2 bus leaves the Salisbury Bus Station at 11.15 a.m. and there is a convenient one back. Book with Jean on 335909 by 18 October.
U3A Choir
The U3A Choir will restart on 26th September in Wilton Community Centre at 2pm. New members, particularly tenors and basses, will be very welcome.

Your Life in YOUR Hands
Salisbury District Hospital is now well on the road to Foundation Trust status. What will that mean to us as patients? How can we influence the services that it provides? How can the spare space at the existing hospital site be best utilised?
The Chief Executive of the hospital’s trust, Frank Harsent, has agreed to come and answer these and many other questions about this radical development at a meeting of the Joint Salisbury U3A Health Care Research Group at 2.0 p.m. on Friday, October 14 at Harnham Memorial Hall.
All U3A members are invited to attend. Come and ensure that the voices of U3A members are heard.
The hospital trust is keen for as many U3A members as possible to become “Members” of the new Foundation Trust. This will enable our members to have the opportunity to influence the way the hospital and its services develop in the future. Membership forms will be available at the meeting.
Some “Members” will like to become actively involved in local hospital affairs, others may just want to be kept informed about developments. All are invited to join whether they wish to be “active” or “passive” members.
This development is of vital interest to us all - our health and well being depends on it ! Do come and please encourage other U3A members to come too.
There will be the usual attendance fee of £1.
