and EDUCATION Many groups are now starting up again after a summer break; others are brand-new or have never paused for breath! I wish you all joy in the amazingly varied activities, and fulfillment of the old adage 'live and learn'. The list of vacancies within Salisbury U3A groups is now available and will be displayed at our monthly Sarum Coffee Mornings from 17th September onwards (as will our own, now fairly minimal, vacancies). Please ring the Salisbury U3A Group Leaders directly, the sooner the better. There has been a suggestion that we could start a Playhouse Theatre Group. The idea is that members would go to current Salisbury Playhouse productions at their own convenience, then meet up with others to discuss the production, author, actors, background etc. Sign up at the monthly Coffee Morning to register interest. As usual, the group can only run if someone volunteers to coordinate meetings. Hosting and leading the discussion could be undertaken in turns. Jean Lunnon Groups Organiser. |

York University provided a very pleasant venue with its lakes, bridges and bird life. The scattered buildings kept us well exercised, and after the Dinner we discovered a hilarious unisex loo with coloured lights and fantastic fountain. The conference theme of "I can do that!" was demonstrated aptly by four clarinet players who had started learning only six months ago. They illustrated a lecture by their teacher, playing simple, then gradually more complex four-part pieces very pleasing to the ear. Discussion sessions in small groups are always popular so two were arranged. In the first we all looked at up-dating the Objects and Principles of the U3A; in the second eleven different groups dealt with ways in which these are put into practice. I led one on 'Learning Online' and had a great deal of support for our U3A courses. The results of both sets will be published and circulated. The new Learning Support Group presented themselves; our Regional representative is Anne Marie Seacroft. The "Friends of U3A" was launched, inviting members to contribute an annual sum of £15 or more to support the work of the Trust, particularly for innovative projects that will keep the movement flourishing. This will be a way in which members, even those who feel unable to be on a committee or lead a group, will be able to make a personal contribution. Perhaps some of you will wish to join. At the AGM Keith Richards (North London) was elected chairman of the Third Age Trust for the next three years. Ivor Manley (Farnborough) and Rosemary McCulloch (Stamford) are the Vice Chairmen. Neither Motion, on recognising Regions formally, and supporting them financially, was passed. There are now 524 U3As with 130,000 members. Our finances were declared sound so no rise in capitation fee for 2004-5. Sixty percent of the U3A NEWS costs come from advertising which takes up 40% of the space. The inserts last time gave £5,000 profit but we were promised no more scratch cards. The key lecture by Prof. David James of the University of Surrey (and Guildford U3A) on "Learning and Helping Others to Learn" was informative and at the same time amusing, showing us how learning can also be Fun! His final quip was "May you all die young at a great age!" Phyll Babb Chairman |
