Walking Group

Exploring Bus Routes

Thursday 28 August

We shall meet at Salisbury Bus Station for the 11.40 Number 25 bus to Dinton, taking a look at the village, church and Dinton Park with views of Phillips House, then continue on the Nadder circular route as far as Hindon, to explore the village and have some refreshment in the pub before returning to Salisbury by about 17.25. Wednesday 17 September at 10.00am

The speaker will be Mr Rex Sawyer who will talk about “Salisbury Plain - a Miscellany”.

A beautiful drive through the New Forest took us to our destination, Emery Down. It was a warm day, not too hot and we set out walking through the mixed woodland of oak, beech, holly and birch. We skirted “James Hill” which contains a gravel pit and was called “Gravel Hill” in the past. Until the beginning of the Second World War, all major roads, including the A35, were gravelled. Less important routes were mud tracks. At Acres Down a small climb led us to a view over the Forest and to the south, of the Isle of Wight. Canadian troops chose to camp in these pine clad valleys before the D Day landings, as they reminded them of home. Near the end of the walk our promised surprise turned out to be a pond filled with cream and scarlet water lilies.

This is the first of a new series of articles in which group leaders will be giving you a snapshot of one of their group’s activities during the past year. This may help you choose your groups next time, may inspire some of you to form your own group or may lead you to suggest new activities for an existing group.

The visit to Saga Rose at Southampton and to Mottisfont Abbey on Thursday 14 August has been cancelled as the ship will now not arrive until 1600 hours. The visit has been rescheduled for Friday 29 August followed by a visit to the Hospital of St Cross at Winchester described as “England’s oldest and most perfect almshouse”. Here you can enjoy the Wayfarer’s Dole, a guided tour by one of the Brothers, see the Norman church, stroll round the gardens and have tea and cakes. Departure times are as previously advised: the departure from Winchester will be at 5.00 pm.

In view of the inconvenience caused Saga Shipping has allowed a discount on the meal. Credit notes will be issued for use on a future outing. A full refund will be given to those who wish to cancel. Please advise John Ewington (500699) by 25 August. Further details will be on the Noticeboard at the Coffee Morning.

Thursday 16 October

HMS Belfast and Imperial War Museum visit. HMS Belfast is the largest surviving example of Britain’s 20th century naval power and is now a museum moored between Tower Bridge and London Bridge. Departure from Tesco’s is at 8.00 am and Castle Street coach park at 8.15 returning from London at 5.30 pm. The cost is £19.50 including entry fees.
