Phyl Mullins reports that there is a backlog of application forms coming in, but we are almost up to our maximum membership.

We are never satisfied with the weather.  I was pondering this the other day, when we had the first cool day for a month.  We always hope for a perfect summer, but when we get it we complain about the heat and yet people fly abroad to get exactly that.  Now, I hear people saying it is too cool.  What a contrary lot we are!

At the beginning of September, the Annual Conference and A.G.M. is being held in Chester.  I am unable to go but a member of Salisbury U3A is going and I hope to hear about it from him.  Up for discussion are:

1) The future structure of The Third Age Trust. 2) The Provision for Continued Learning.

3) Meeting Increased Membership. 

There is an article on The Structure of the Third Age Trust in the Summer U3A News.  It is worth reading.

If you would like to attend the Study day in Chandlers Ford in October, I need to know now, as I have to let the Organiser know before the end of the month.  Details are in last month’s Newsletter and on the notice board at the coffee morning. 

Christine Dickson, who is Group Organiser for Salisbury U3A will be at the Coffee Morning with a list of vacancies in their groups.  Please check with her, you may find just what you are looking for.

GROUPS

All members who applied for groups should now have received their slips showing ‘YES’ or “WAITING LIST” etc, and Group Leaders should have received names and details of participants.  If this is not the case, please phone Jean on 01722 335909. Group Leaders will no doubt contact their participants in due course to confirm starting dates, venues and arrangements. We all need to make sure we fill in the relevant details in our diaries, at least up to Christmas. Please try to treat group meetings as a prior commitment, as it is disappointing for Group Leaders if people do not turn up. I hope everyone will enjoy the various activities. We certainly are a lively and thriving U3A.

COMPUTING

Neville will have contacted those who put Computing for Beginners as their first priority for September and February, also those who put February as a second priority, and those who applied for Intermediate Computing. All others will be on a Waiting List. For queries, please deal directly with Neville on 01725 510039.

MYSTERY (HALF DAY) TOUR.

We will take a leisurely coach drive through some beautiful countryside. Our destination is a unique venue in the South West with many attractions 'unspoilt by the passage of time'. To end our visit, we shall enjoy a cream tea in a delightful hotel restaurant. Please advise if vegetarian. Minimal walking.

Coach departs the Coach Park, Castle Street at 12 noon and TESCO'S Southampton Road at 12.15 pm.  Return to Salisbury by 7 pm.

EXETER

We visit this city, travelling via Shaftesbury and Honiton. On arrival a guide will join the coach for a 90-minute tour of the city and a video presentation. The tour will terminate with a short guided visit to the medievel Cathedral that boasts the longest unbroken stretch of Gothic vaulting in the world.  This will be followed by lunch (own arrangements). Suggested visits are to the Guildhall (open 2-4 pm) and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery from where our coach will collect us at 4.30pm.

Depart TESCO's Southampton Road at 8 am and Castle Street Coach Park at 8.15 am

LA BOHEME

The Welsh National Opera returns to the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton for a performance of LA BOHEME. We have secured centre stall tickets with surtitle views. There are no matinee performances. 

Cost: £32.50 including coach and driver gratuity.

Depart Castle Street Coach Park at 6.00 pm and TESCO'S Southampton Road at 6.15 pm Performance starts at 7.15 pm returning from Southampton at approximately 10.00 pm.
