October will see the 10 th Anniversary of the founding of Sarum U3A. Plans are being
made to celebrate this in November and details will appear in next
month's Newsletter. Meanwhile the Annual Conference and AGM of U3A nationally will be taking place at Leicester University from 22 nd -24 th August. Phyll. Babb will represent us there, and will let us have a resume of what went on, particularly at the AGM. A number of motions have been put forward, particularly to do with the rights of various regions. Sarum belongs to the Central Southern region roughly covering Hampshire and Dorset and we attend regular meetings with other U3As in the region to exchange ideas and discuss matters of mutual interest. |
Finally, there will be a meeting of the Combined
U3As health Research Group at Harnham Memorial Hall at 2.0pm on Monday
6 th
September, when senior members of Salisbury Health Care trust will talk
about patient communication in the local health service. This research Group, under the guidance of Anne Gould, Chairman of Spire U3A, has already produced a report, following a survey of all members, on a variety of subjects concerning the health service and this meeting is part of the ongoing research. I hope Sarum will be well represented at a meeting to discuss matters of general concern to us all. Please let me know (tel:3220180) if you wish to attend so that we have some idea of numbers. (There will be a small charge of 50p to defray the hall expenses). Peter Tee. |

NEW
computer enthusiasts.
Are YOU one of those unfortunates who have been
on a computer course, finished and then find things you have forgotten
or operations that do not work for you. DON'T give up! Two members of Sarum have volunteered to be your Friendly Guide. There is nothing so comforting than to have someone who can explain (in a language the learner can understand). This is NOT a course, neither is it a "doctor" service if your computer is at fault. Alan Reeve on 714907 and , and Simone Mattinson have offered to help. Contact them when you are stuck! Thank you to both these kind people |

If you
have access to the web try this site to find our newsletter (in pretty
colours!) and those of Spire and Salisbury.
(Editor) The site for courses offered by National U3A on line, is now HERE. I am most impressed by what is on offer. Tutored courses for £10 are listed. They last for a period of either 8 or 16 weeks. For the cost of £5, these and all others can be down loaded untutored for personal use or for use with your group. If you find attending courses difficult, why not try these. If anyone has followed one of these courses may I have a brief report please to put in our newsletter. |

MONTHLY COFFEE ROTA
Despite a
large membership it is still difficult to find people willing to take a
turn with the preparation and serving of coffee at our monthly meetings
and the task falls to a small number of willing volunteers. If you are
prepared to help please put your name and telephone number on the list
at the monthly meetings, or talk to me.

| Sarum Painting
Group Holiday 16 th -18thJuly After another successful year, selling over 40 paintings, Alan Wood took the group to Herefordshire for a short painting break. Jenny Parker arranged the weekend for nine of us with her daughter who is Warden in Charge. Juliet warmly welcomed us at Trewern Adventure Holidays and before dinner, we painted the rich golden fields surrounding Trewern in changing afternoon light. A lovely meal and then to our comfortable rooms. Next day, in spite of heavy showers we managed to splash paint to represent the waterfall at Blaen y Glyn from under our dripping golf umbrellas. A quick juggle to shelter with folding chairs, umbrellas and paint-boxes, using one's spare hand, became tedious after rain had stopped play for the third time. The local midges were loving the humidity AND our bare ankles. Would Alwyn Crawshaw have managed any better? Certainly not. Our renderings made a colourful and imaginative display as we analysed our valiant efforts later over a glass of wine. It had definitely been Watercolour Challenge. On the last day, Juliet took us in her mini-bus to Llangorse Reservoir at Cusop. The weather was kinder and the sun and shadows helped to mould the hilly Welsh landscape into painterly relief. A herd of cows wandered across the strand to add interest and several sailing boats ventured out onto the water to give bright splashes of colour. A much more promising day for painting. Returning to base we were met by wonderful smells. Juliet had spoiled us again with one of her sumptuous cakes and pots of tea to see us on our various ways home. Please Alan can we go again next year? Thank you to Alan, Jenny and Juliet for enabling us to have another lovely painting holiday. Edna Vidler |
