From the Chairman
You will receive this month your form, either in your Newsletter or by email, for
you to renew your membership. Please follow the instructions on the form very carefully. When you
send your cheque, please make it payable to Sarum U3A: this applies whenever you need to write
a cheque to your U3A or one of its officers. For the sake of members who have recently joined,
the £11 that you pay is made up of £1 for the magazine, which you receive by post,
the fee of £2.50 to the national association and £7.50 to Sarum. If there are two members
at the same address, combined fee is £21 as only one magazine is then received.
The money Sarum receives pays for our excellent speakers, the hire of the hall and the refreshments
for the Coffee Mornings and the expenses of the committee. The committee do a very good job and
especially our treasurer, at present Maureen Pardy.
Please remember to buy your tickets for the New Years Party in January. The tickets are still £4
as last year. They can be purchased at the November or December Coffee Mornings or obtained by
post from Mrs Clare Edwards, 6 Merrifield Road, Salisbury, SP4 5DF. Please enclose your cheque
and a stamped/addressed envelope. It is important that we know how many are coming for catering
purposes.
I thought you would be interested to know
that at this moment there are 651 U3As and 187,042 members in the UK. It is certainly a
very popular movement and serves a need amongst the older generation. Josephine

There are two methods of paying your membership fee—either by cheque or standing
order. If you are already paying by standing order, please do not send a cheque as
well.
Your renewal form can be returned in two ways, either by posting to Phyl Mullins (address on the
form) or by placing in the box provided at the December Coffee Morning.
Group Organiser
Dates In 2008 Diaries
I expect we all now have our diaries for 2008 and that they are filling up amazingly quickly. Please
make sure that you have sorted out dates for next year’s meetings with your Group Leaders
and filled them in as a prior commitment. Regular attendance is important for groups to thrive. Also,
of course, you need to renew your annual Sarum U3A subscription soon in order to continue attending
your groups. I hear good reports of members enjoying their various activities.
Sunday Lunches
We are most grateful for the successful running of our side of this Joint Group for many years
by Bob and Beryl Adcock, and more recently by Stella Gibson, but they are no longer able to coordinate
arrangements. We would welcome a volunteer to carry on the good work (contact Jean on 335909).
Meanwhile, the Salisbury U3A organiser has kindly agreed that Sarum members who wish to join in
from January onwards can contact Sheila directly on 324344. These lunches take place on the first
or second Sunday of the month in pubs in and around Salisbury.
Coffee Mornings
Wednesday 21 November at 10.00am
U3A 25th Anniversary Celebration. Phyl Babb will report on the U3A conference
which took place on the cruise ship Van Gogh. Josephine will then talk about the purpose of U3A
with particular reference to the U3As of Salisbury. There will be a question and answer session.
The morning will end with the cutting and eating of an anniversary cake, with wine or juice.

Joint U3A Health Care Research Group
At the Group’s recent meeting, Sally Tomlin, Chief Pharmacist at Salisbury
District Hospital, thanked Group members for the survey work they undertook for her department.
She explained how the first stage of the recommendations given in the survey report, had already
been implemented. Chris Phillips from Wiltshire Primary Care Trust explained the new electronic
prescription system which is to be introduced. During the next few months, some members of the
Group will be engaged in food sampling, kitchen visits, observational audits of mealtime care,
and signage at the local hospital.
The next meeting of the Group will be at 2.00pm on Friday 22 February at Harnham Memorial Hall
when Chris Gwyther, Manager of Salisbury NHS Trust’s Medical Directorate, will talk about
a new approach being developed for A & E medical services at Salisbury District Hospital.
The February meeting of the Group will be the last unless a new Group leader can be found. The
present leader, Eric Gould, is giving up due to neglected personal commitments. Anyone who would
like to know more about what leadership of this group involves should contact Eric on 339868.
