FROM THE CHAIRMAN
I hope you have been enjoying the lovely weather. Even the rain was welcome as the gardens were so dry. Many of you will have been away. Hopefully you have returned refreshed and are now ready to begin to think about the Autumn.
I understand there is to be a Central Southern Region Study day at Chandlers Ford on Wednesday 11th October. The title is “Understanding the Three E’s - Economics, the Environment and Europe”. It takes place at Kings Court, Winchester Road, Chandlers Ford from 10.00am to 3.00pm. We have been asked to send two representatives, but unfortunately I am unable to go, as I shall be away. GROUP ALLOCATIONS
Jean writes:
Thanks to everyone for cooperating in the annual groups allocations exercise. You should receive your reply slip at the July Coffee Morning, with your Newsletter or by post a few days later. With so many new members and nearly 500 requests overall, you are to be congratulated in spreading yourselves out so well over the 43 groups. As I write, about a third are at about the right level, but there are still one or two places in the following groups: Appreciating Wine (NB now starts at 2.30pm), Birdwatching, Alternative Healing, Book Readers, Basic French, Gardening, Scrabble, Walking, Town & Country Inns - Group B, Bridge for Enjoyment, Watercolour Painting, Making Better Use of your Camera, Bridge for Pleasure, Small Collectables (now monthly). Phone me on 335909 if you would like to add one of these, especially if you have been unable to join in another group. Science & Technology and Archaeology numbers are not limited – just turn up.
Some groups are over-subscribed and have a waiting list i.e. Painting for Pleasure I, Wessex Writers, Music Appreciation, Mah Jong, Woodcarving, Current Affairs, Brush Up your French, Writing for Pleasure, Computing for Beginners (see below), Easy Listening, Village Visits (NB priority to newer members), French for Beginners and French Advanced (even though I have started a second group), Architecture. Starting dates are provisional and need to be confirmed. Let me know if you wish to withdraw from any group. If you chose Croquet or Digital Imaging, please contact the Leaders immediately.
CHANGES
Please note the following changes to the original programme: Olive Cork has very kindly offered to coordinate the Playhouse Discussion Group; her details are on your Reply Slip. The Legacy of the Romans will not be running this year. The Appreciating Wine Group is at 2.30 pm not 10.30am. Small Collectables is now monthly. As advertised, this year Sarum Strollers has no coordinator, so members will need to contact others on the list, perhaps in a cascade system – unless someone volunteers to coordinate!
I wish you well in your activities, many thanks to the tireless Group Leaders.
COMPUTING FOR BEGINNERS
As I write, the Salisbury U3A coordinator is still dealing with the many applications from the three U3As and will probably have to draw lots. Regular attendance will be essential. I shall let members know as soon as possible whether or not their application has been successful. Those who are disappointed could contact the Salisbury College Cross Keys Centre to look into the free courses there - as many of our members have done already.

Walkers
Walkers please note the walk Josephine Hawkins is leading on Thursday 27th July may be muddy in places and if it is wet there is quite a lot of grass path walking but there are no steep hills!
Also, please note that the new plan for Thursday 31st August is to meet at The Crown Inn, Bishop’s Canning, for a walk on Wansdyke. Contact Marilyn on 01980 654092 if you wish to come.
GIFT AID DECLARATION
Bryan Griffiths writes:
Your annual subscription can be treated as a Gift Aid Donation to Sarum U3A, which is a registered Charity. This currently means that for every member of Sarum U3A who pays tax, we can claim back £2.80 from the Inland Revenue for your £10 subscription. (NB Subscriptions are £10 plus £1 per household postage for U3A news).
To claim Gift Aid I need everyone who is a taxpayer and agrees to support this scheme to fill in and sign the accompanying document and return it to me, or any committee member personally, or to me by post urgently. We can also claim up to 6 previous years. Please mark the form for the years you have paid a subscription to Sarum U3A and tax.
By claiming back a substantial amount of Tax it should allow us to comfortably delay any thoughts of Subscription increases for some time to come, so please fill in the forms promptly as it is in all our interests to do so.
