Dear Friends
One of the great advantages of belonging to a U3A is the opportunity to meet like-minded people and make new friends.  What can be equally rewarding is meeting people from other U3As and sharing experiences with them.  Here in Salisbury we are blessed with three U3As – Sarum, Spire and Salisbury – and, following the success of last year’s Hog Roast, a joint event is proposed to take place in the autumn at which the three U3As get together and display the products of their activity groups (like we did at our AGM recently) and share a meal. This could be a great way of encouraging interaction between our U3As and getting new ideas for our own groups.  The venue would be Alderbury Village Hall that can hold a large number of people, so there would be no limit on numbers; and there is a bus stop directly outside the hall.  I hope people will find this an attractive event and support it.

James has had a very exciting life from being commissioned from Sandhurst into the Royal Glos Hussars through to Central Staffs Intelligence Office – via Air Intelligence including D-Day, serving on the Continent, reverting after the war to TA and RAF intelligence.

Local History Group
Matt Braban writes:
Sarum U3A’s Local History Group has been running for a number of years and has grown in popularity every year.  It started with Jenny Mawer and Jim Watkinson leading a group of 10 people. Each year there were more applicants than places so Jean Lunnon offered to lead a separate group that would study local literary figures. This group also enjoyed a good response.
For the 2009/10 season, each member of the original group selected a local village to study and came up with some interesting and sometimes surprising facts from the past. Again, it was necessary to create another group – this time led by Pauline Watts. This group studied Wilton which is large enough and with enough history to occupy the whole group.
Each year Jenny has edited each member’s researches and produced some very impressive papers. These created much interest at the exhibition of group activities held in conjunction with the AGM in March.
This year ended with a light lunch at the Kings House Café in Salisbury Museum, where there was a discussion on past labours and what direction the group’s research will take for the 2010/11 season.

Art & Artists
Jose Staley writes:
Peter Tee usually commences with a book selection of the paintings of the chosen artist, ranging from the very well known like Paul Cezanne and Caravaggio, to the lesser known such as Dufy and Edward Hopper. Although we may think that we know some of these artists well through their paintings, Peter always brings us much more information via their biographies, reference to contemporaries, and lesser-known works.
Those who wish are able to research and present on an artist of their choice for a session, and we are encouraged to contribute snippets from our own resources or knowledge. A BBC video of the artist’s exhibited work is shown, with a commentary and in-depth explanation of their paintings by art critic Tim Marlow.
We conclude with an informal class discussion of the session, followed by welcome refreshments provided by Joan, Peter’s wife.
I enjoy the group and would recommend it to others.
