From the Chairman
After the most glorious weather, today as I write, it has become cooler and we are promised rain, lovely for the gardens. This month, we say goodbye to Alan Reeve as our newsletter editor, who is moving away. Thank you, Alan, for your time as editor, and we shall miss you on the committee and at the coffee mornings. We welcome Bob Bradshaw, who is taking over from Alan. Please be sure to send any items for June to his e-mail address, or to the address given at the end of the newsletter. We were very pleased with the response when we asked for volunteers, and thank those who offered their help.
I hope you are enjoying the summer outings arranged for you. By now, the first Days Out on Local Buses will have taken place, and the second Summer Garden visit. Croquet will be taking place on Mondays, see last month’s newsletter for details.
I expect a great many of you are off on your holidays. I hope you all have an enjoyable time. Remember that, certainly in the UK and often abroad, you will meet other U3A members. It is fun to compare notes and get new ideas. On a cruise we were on, a member from Harrow gave a most interesting talk on his U3A. This was included in the ship’s daily programme. Obviously the cruise director thought we were important enough to be worth a slot.

GROUPS SEPTEMBER 2007-8

At the beginning of June, all Sarum U3A members will receive by post a copy of the new programme for groups September 2007-2008, a description of activities and a Groups Application Form. As usual, in fairness to the many new members and to those who want a change, all members must apply or re-apply for all groups.
You can apply to join up to 5 Sarum U3A or Joint groups, stating your priority preferences. Most applicants will be able to join their first choice group and probably others, depending on popularity and size of groups. Look out for new groups – why not try something different? Please only apply for groups that you expect to be able to attend on a reasonably regular basis, otherwise you may be preventing someone else from participating. The whole form should be returned at the 20th June Coffee Morning or by post by that day. The reply slips showing your allocations will be available at the 18th July Coffee Morning or with your July Newsletter. Best wishes for the difficult task of choosing from such a wide range!
The Joint Salisbury U3A’s Health Care Research Group
Friday 6th July at 2.00 pm at Harnham Memorial Hall and, as usual, all members of the three Salisbury U3As are welcome. The attendance fee has now been reduced to 30p.
At this meeting, the Chief Executive, or one of his deputies, will talk about the radical changes in train for Salisbury Hospital’s A & E department and its operating theatres.
This will result in a totally different approach to local medical and surgical services.
Improving Local Health Care
The Health Care Research Group wishes to thank all U3A members who responded to the appeal for comments about the new wing at Salisbury District Hospital. These will be taken up at a “Post Project Evaluation” meeting of the Hospital Trust on 4th May to ensure that they are taken into consideration when planning the next phase in the hospital’s development.
Our Group has been invited to be represented on a SDH working group to make recommendations for improving direction signs in and around the hospital. If any U3A member, whether a Group member or not, would like to participate please contact the Group Leader, Eric Gould, on 01722 339868.
2008 U3A Diaries
Gosh, it’s nearly next year! But seriously, Claire Edwards needs 2008 U3A Diary orders as soon as possible. The cost is £1.90. If you are unable to order at the May or June coffee mornings, please send a cheque, payable to Sarum U3A, to Claire at 6 Merrifield Road, Ford, Salisbury, SP4 6DF by the end of June at the very latest.

Garden Visits
Wednesday 13th June
We shall be visiting Mottisfont Abbey. Meet at Tesco’s Southampton Road car park at 10.00 am. If you are a member of the NT, you should take your membership card, as there is an entrance fee of £8.50. If you are planning to go, please telephone Brenda on 01722 322657.
A Day Out On A Local Bus
Olive Cork writes: On a sunny May 3rd, at 10.15 five of us caught the No. 29 bus from Salisbury Bus Station to Shaftesbury. Well, we meant to catch it but there was something wrong with the bus so the driver had to fetch a replacement. However, after a short delay we were off.
This was a very interesting route as it deviated from the direct route passing through several of those villages that we would not normally visit. The views from a bus are always more extensive than from the family car!
Many thanks to the guinea pigs who turned up for this first venture. Some will always just come for the journey, others to enjoy the destination. Some may wish to drop off en route rather than complete the journey - this is a very flexible way to travel!
I would like to arrange further trips during the summer months, when the weather is most likely to be pleasant and when several of the U3A courses will have finished until the autumn. I am thinking of fortnightly visits, normally on a Thursday and more or less straddling the lunch hour. A list of the first two or three should be available at the May Coffee Morning. Unlike many "courses", numbers are not restricted so we look forward to meeting many of you.
Joint U3A Outings & Visits
Wednesday 27th June
We will have a guided tour of LULWORTH CASTLE & CHAPEL near Wareham, including a Jousting Show.
Depart Coach Park, Castle Street 9.15 am, Tesco's, Southampton Road 9.30 am. Return from Lulworth at 4.00 pm. Cost £14.50 including entry to Castle, Chapel, park and jousting show. English Heritage members pay £12.80. Members of Historic Houses Association pay £8. You must bring your membership card with you.
