Please refer to the notes in the April Newsletter for information about next year's courses. Early in June you will be receiving an envelope in the post with all the documents.
Several new courses have been offered as a direct consequence of last month's Coffee Morning when time was given to discussing ways of leading a group. Although the programme will be published and choices made, it is always possible to add to it during the year if a group can get together with a willing leader.
The Architecture group will be visiting: Southampton on Friday 23 May to be taken around the walls and to see some historic buildings. A member of Southampton U3A will be our guide.
Portcullis House, Westminster, and places in the City of London on Friday 6 June.
If you would like to join us please phone Phyll Babb.
The Croquet season commenced on Monday 28 April at the Salisbury and South Wilts Sports Club ground in Wilton Road. New members are welcome. Please contact Aileen Manchee.
A limited time at our April meeting prevented the Current Affairs Group from having an opportunity to publicly invite more members to join our group.
We are now in our 20th month meeting every 2 weeks throughout the year, at 10.30 on a Tuesday. We discuss the news and events of the day, local, national and international. Just to give you a flavour of our past subjects I list a few to show you the variety:
Should be adopt the Euro? Call Centres, The Countryside March, The BBC Famous Ten, A National Police Force, Do we really need men? Mick Jagger's knighthood, The 10 most powerful women, A national identity card, gentlemen prefer blondes, Saatchi's new exhibition. We also regularly ask the question: will IDS be the next prime minister?
There is a considerable divergence of opinion on nearly every subject, and by listening to the opinion of others, some members may have re-examined their position.
It you are interested and willing to express your views on any matter relating to our existence on this planet, then you would be most welcome. Currently we have 7 members and we would all like an injection of new blood to bring our number up to 12.

Our Web Site: www.salisburyu3a.org.uk
All three U3As in Salisbury have set up a joint web site on the internet which can be accessed by anyone with the right equipment. There is a general section on items of common interest and three links, one to each U3A, Salisbury & District, Sarum and Spire.
HQ gave advice on setting it up. A very small annual sum is required, but the hard part usually is finding someone to maintain such an operation. Fortunately Peter Read of Spire has agreed to be this key person.
It is still at an early stage of development but in the Sarum section you will find the latest Newsletter, and the report of each coffee Morning sent to the Journal. If you have any other ideas you think will be useful to include please get in touch with the chairman, or Bill Willson email .
Organised by Sarum
Wednesday 18 June Visit to Porton Down. Very few members have asked to go. Do you realise what a priviledge it is to see this part of secluded Wiltshire? If you love the countryside and can walk a little way do join us. Please phone Clare Edwards for details and give her information for the MOD.
Organised by Salisbury's Rosemary Nicholls
Tuesday 24 June Forde Abbey - still 2 seats.
Thursday 3 July Brighton - still 6 seats.
Monday 4 July Hestercombe - a few seats.
Thursday 7 August Theatre trip to Chichester to see Chekhov's "The Seagull". £24.60. Coach only £8.60. Pickup: Coach Station 9.30am, Tesco's 9.40am
Please call Rosemary to check availability of seats and only then send cheque, made payable to 'Salisbury & District U3A' addressed to Rosemary Nicholls and stating your pickup point.
A WAKEUP CALL TO THE WALKING GROUP (Could this principle apply to other groups too?)
Walk leaders have to make a commitment to lead walks for the group as much as 12 months in advance. It is obviously a great disappointment to them when only 5 turn up to support them, as happened on Aileen's outing in April (2 couples and a single). Although light rain was forecast, we had a most enjoyable walk with only a few spots of rain, and we left many shadows on the downs and meadows of the valley. I would urge all members to appreciate that they also have an obligation, and I believe that they should at least turn up at the venue and join in any discussion on whether the walk will go ahead. We must not just become a Fairweather Only Walking Group, otherwise, I suspect, it will become impossible to get leaders in future.
