From the Chairman

Dear Friends

As many of you will be aware, at our Annual General Meeting in March there were some changes to the committee.

Phyl Mullins and Ena Baldock decided to stand down after many years of service. I’d like to offer huge thanks to both of them for their valuable contributions.

Neil Russell has taken responsibility for Projects, in particular leading our exciting new Computer Project. Two new members were welcomed to the committee: Judith Copeland, our Newsletter Editor, and Chris Perry, who has got off to a roaring start as Visits Organiser.

I’d like to say thank you to all our hard working committee members, group leaders and everyone who helps make Sarum U3A such an enjoyable experience. We can look forward to an exciting and fruitful year ahead.

With best wishes

Gordon Pardy

Leaders Needed

Several very popular groups will not happen next year unless someone volunteers to take them on. Their leaders, understandably, have decided to stand down after giving sterling service. They will be happy to provide you with advice. These groups meet once a month. No expertise is required. Please see Linda at the April Coffee Morning (she is the one looking anxious!) or phone her (01722 710599) or email lindafarrow99@btinternet.com

The size of the group is up to you and the number of chairs you have! Meetings are sometimes held in the homes of other members of the group.

Italian Renaissance – an on-line course with all materials provided. Members of the group take turns at presenting topics.

Alternative Healing Discussion Group – Topics to be agreed with the group.

Easy Listening – you provide the Hi-Fi – the group provides the music.

Psychology for Beginners – all materials provided. Contact person and venue needed.

Strollers (2-3 mile gentle walks with a pub at the end) – members take turns to organise walks and book the pub. You initiate the first outing.

Country Inns – the Lincolns have kindly agreed to take this on but, as there are usually 3 groups, they will need assistant leaders. Same pubs in a different order.

Town Pub Lunches – a group for those who do not want to drive. Be a contact for the group and book the pubs.

How about a new group – Classic Films – to complement the Foreign Film groups? All you need is a reasonable sized TV screen. Films can be hired and costs shared with the group.

Computer Project

Some of you will have seen the books about computing that were on display in March. They are now available for sale at Computer Corner.

Endorsed by the Third Age Trust, they are written in plain English with a minimum of jargon and are excellent both for getting started and for those who want to extend their knowledge, as well as making useful reference books.

“Computing for the Older and Wiser”, sub-titled ‘Get Up and Running on Your Home PC’, is for beginners and takes you through the basics of computing, starting with turning the computer on and through the basics of e-mail and digital photography.

“The Internet for the Older and Wiser”, sub-titled ‘Get Up and Running Safely on the Web’ needs a basic understanding of the computer and takes you through getting started on the internet to more advanced e-mail, shopping and much more.

“Microsoft Office for the Older and Wiser” is for more advanced users and covers the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint for home office use. These are the programmes that I use for writing letters and minutes of meetings, producing membership cards, slide shows, mail merge, running bank and savings accounts etc etc.

“Laptops for the Older and Wiser” is about choosing and using a new laptop with lots of useful tips.

These books are available at the monthly Coffee Morning for £8 each. This is the cost price and we make no profit from the sales. Further books in the ‘Older and Wiser’ series, endorsed by the Third Age Trust, are available on-line from Amazon, covering Digital Photography, Family History and Social Networking.

Studying at Home

If you want to study in your own time at home, there are two sets of CDs available on free loan from the Third Age Trust Resource Centre. These are designed for self-learning for beginners and are entitled “Beginners Computer Course” and “Internet and E-mail”. They run on the CD/DVD player on your PC and you can work at any speed revising as you go. To obtain these, contact Elizabeth Gibson at the Third Age Trust, tel: 020 8315 0199 or e-mail resource.centre@u3a.org.uk (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays only).
