Tony Munday, Membership Secretary

Dear Friends
It is a great honour to be elected Chairman of Sarum U3A for the next 2 years and I look forward to the challenges of the role.  I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor Neil Russell who has completed his term of office leaving the organisation in fine order: the membership limit has been increased from 300 to 350; we are in a sound position financially, with no need for an increase in the subscription fee this year; and from September there will be an increased number of activity groups.  I am pleased to announce that Neil has agreed to remain on the committee as a co-opted member.
Thanks also to the 3 retiring committee members Ena Baldock, Clare Edwards and Phyl Mullins for their contributions to the smooth running of the organisation for many years. Ena and Phyl have also agreed to stay on as co-opted members.
I would like to welcome 2 new keen committee members: Tony Munday as Membership Secretary and Pat Read as Speaker Secretary.  The full committee list is as follows:

We have a vacancy for a Press Officer, an exciting job for a budding wordsmith. The main task is to write a 250-word article each month for Salisbury Journal’s Neighbourhood News Section, largely based around the news announced at the Coffee Morning and the guest speaker’s speech.  If you are interested, please contact me on 01722 504295.

Bernard Burke IBS ACIT will talk on “30 Years in TV Broadcasting”.  He has had a 30 year career in the television broadcasting industry during which time he met no less than FIVE serving Prime Ministers.

Welcome to all New Members. Next month – May – I will be sending out the programme for 2010-11 when everyone, new and old members, has an equal chance of getting into groups for next year. I thought there was little point in sending you the list of this year’s vacancies as so many groups finish about now. I look forward to meeting you at the April coffee morning.  Please say hello.

Walking Group

Meet and park along the wall in the small turning off South Street opposite the Post Office in Broadchalke (GR: SU 037 253) to set out at 10.00 am for a walk of about 4½ miles, along farm tracks to Fifield Bavant and back through the watercress fields.  Lunch is at the Horseshoe Inn, Ebbesbourne Wake.

An Untypical Morning at the Easy Listening Group

Phyl Mullins writes: After fortifying ourselves with coffee and hot X buns, we settled down to a morning of music. The first disc of Caruso never made the machine – thanks to a workman outside severing the cable, we were “powerless” to continue! In the meantime, hoping for a return of power, we discussed all manner of topics (including music) and made the best of it. “You Are My Heart’s Delight” is scheduled for May.

Loire Valley, France
