From the Chairman

My first task as Chairman is to recognize the work done by your past chairman, Josephine. Under her leadership our U3A has flourished to the point where we have full membership and an extensive programme of activities. We have also had a growth in the joint activities with Salisbury and Spire U3A's. This does not happen by itself, it takes effort.

We are a self-help organisation and everybody gives freely of their time, without this dedication we would not have a U3A. Josephine has put in a lot of effort to get us to the point where we are now, and I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to her for the time and trouble taken over the past two years.

As you may know Josephine will be leaving Salisbury soon so I would like to wish her, on your behalf, every happiness in her new life in Norfolk.

Groups

Groups Organiser
ANY MORE IDEAS FOR GROUPS?
Thank you to all the stalwart volunteers who have agreed to run a group in the coming year. The programme offers a really interesting range of opportunities for learning new skills or for continuing to enjoy your existing groups.
I am in the process of finalising the programme for next year. If you have a brainwave for a new group and are prepared to run it (or can suggest someone who might), please discuss it with me as soon as possible. I will be happy to send you a Group Planning sheet.
Suggestions so far include: Bible Studies, Flower Arranging, Shared Dinner Parties, Visiting Country Houses, Understanding Economics and Philosophy. These can only go ahead if someone is prepared to run them. Group leaders need enthusiasm and interest but not necessarily specialist knowledge. Some groups run as collaborative study groups with all members contributing and some have two leaders. In a number, the venue moves round members’ homes. As Jean said – No volunteers, no groups.

Our Loudspeaker System

Having now taken on the role of Chairman I would much appreciate it if somebody would take over the role of looking after our microphone and loudspeaker system. You do not need any technical knowledge, the wires are colour coded and it is simple to set up, but it does require that you, or a friend, are available at each of our monthly meetings to bring the equipment to the hall.
In the future we have plans to purchase a new and more modern p.a. system and we will also be looking at the possibilities of storing this equipment at the hall, although I can offer no guarantees! Please let me, or any member of the committee, know if you are able to take on this vital task, as without this equipment we cannot effectively run our monthly meetings. The contact telephone numbers are given in this newsletter.

Having Your Say About Local Health Matters

Although the Joint Salisbury U3A’s Health Care Research Group has ceased to meet through lack of a Group Leader, a new system has been put in place to ensure that U3A members are still represented in local health matters. Eric and Anne Gould of Spire U3A will continue to act as a link between us, the local hospital and the Primary Care Trust. As Patient Representative Coordinators they will pass on to “contacts” in each the Salisbury U3As, any requests for representation on local health projects. Daphne Torok has kindly offered to act as the contact for Sarum U3A. Do please give her your support when she asks for someone to represent us.
Our members have been engaged in a number of projects including MRSA and other infection control, patient discharge system, patient food and nutrition, hospital signage and appointment letters. For the full report see the Noticeboard.
