Welcome to New Members
Sally Jermy, Michael Pointer and Annette Barwell.
I have now been back for two weeks from our Round Africa Cruise. We enjoyed it very much indeed, but are glad to be home.
First of all, my thanks to Jenny Mawer for standing in so ably for me. I gather that the meetings I have missed went well and that you enjoyed them. Also, thanks to all who help run our U3A, it takes a great many people to keep things running smoothly. We welcome Maureen Pardy to the Committee as Treasurer, but please take note that Alan Reeve is now the only man on the Committee, so next time there is a vacancy, please would one or two men offer their services as well as ladies. (see below – Ed)
It is 25 years since the first U3As were formed. This made me wonder who amongst us has been a member longest. This would be someone who joined Salisbury U3A when that was started. U3As are becoming more popular all the time, judging by the number of people asking to join. This is happening everywhere; every time I go to a regional meeting we welcome a representative from a newly formed U3A.
Very soon, Jean Lunnon will be sending out the Groups Programme for 2007-8. I’m sure there will be something to tempt everyone of you; whether to continue with something you have already enjoyed, or to try something new. An enjoyable U3A year to you all.

Alan Reeve - our Newsletter Editor is, unfortunately, leaving the district at the end of May! We need to find a replacement Urgently. If you would like to become Editor, please contact either Alan Reeve or our Chairman as soon as possible for further information. It is an interesting job, but does require Word Processing and e-mail skills to edit this important lifeline for Sarum U3A.
The Groups Organiser writes:
Members have responded encouragingly to my requests for new Group Leaders. Poetry, Crosswords, Croquet and one of the Inn groups have been smoothly handed on, and there are offers to run new groups for Cooking, Handicrafts, Travel, Greeting Cards, Spanish and Art & Artists and perhaps one or two others. I would still like a volunteer to take over Book Readers and to hear from anyone else who might wish to run a group. Ring Jean on 01722 335909. Application forms for our 40 or so groups from September 2007 will reach everyone in early June. Meanwhile, some groups continue after Easter and you will see in this Newsletter some special Summer activities. Many thanks to all volunteers.
Olive Cork writes: In the March Newsletter, Jean Lunnon mentioned a suggestion for a new group, Days Out on Local Buses. George and I are interested in organising this and propose to run a pilot trip to Shaftesbury on Thursday, 3rd May.
If you think you may be interested in this activity or if your just fancy a bus ride with company, join us at Salisbury Bus Station to catch the No. 29 at 10.15 a.m arriving at Shaftesbury at 11.22 am.
On arrival there will be various options, visiting local attractions, shopping or just having lunch. Buses for the return journey leave at either 14.08 or 16.08 pm For further information, ring George and Olive on 01722 504425 or just turn up. Don't forget your BUS PASS.
Croquet starts up again, every Monday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at the Skew Bridge playing fields.
If you would like to improve your computer skills, Salisbury Training Partnership are running a number of short day courses at the Salt Lane Learning Centre during May and June. Further information will be posted at Coffee Mornings or please ‘phone Claire Edwards on 01722 328240 if you are interested. The average cost is £25.00 per session.
Peter Read writes: Can you inform your members that we shall be starting a Sarum Digital Imaging class on 29th June.
The class will be every 4 weeks on Friday mornings.
The class will cover the basic controls needed for manipulating and printing successful digital pictures.
We expect that the course will last about 8 to 10 sessions.
For more information and booking in ring Peter or Sheila Read on 01722 501 218 or by email
Neil Russell writes: The April walk is from Fritham in the New Forest.
The pub we shall be using is the Royal Oak, which is very popular. Unfortunately they do not take reservations as they are always busy, but as a special deal they have agreed to hold a table for us only until 12.30 at the latest. As a result of this, and to avoid having otherwise a rather short walk, we will start at 9.30 instead of the usual 10.00.
Please also note that the Royal Oak do not take credit cards.
Jim Watkinson writes: I am interested in two subjects which others might like to consider for new groups next 'year' - forming a “Jazz Enthusiasts Group” to listen to items from each other’s collections, visit performances etc - (we already have Classical music lovers and Easy Listening enthusiasts) - and then as the owner of three “Classic Cars” dating from 1934 to 1965, perhaps there are like-minded members around who would like to get together to form a group, again for discussions, outings etc. I know there are other such groups in U3A around the country but this area seems devoid of such things. If you are interested, please let me know, on 01722 332263 or by e-mail
Coffee Mornings start at 10.00 am for 10.30 am.
Wednesday 16th May
We welcome the return of Rex Sawyer who will give us a talk about Collett’s Farthing Newspaper. The story of a local newspaper edited by the Vicar of Broadchalke between 1878 and 1924.
A visit to Lulworth Castle is planned for July and a cruise in 2008 to Norwegian Fjords is being canvassed.
Please see the Notice Board at Coffee Mornings for details of these and other visits or contact John Ewington on 01722 500699.
Peter Tee would like to thank all those members who have sent him stamp-addressed envelopes for their copies of the Sarum Newsletter. He would be very pleased to receive your envelopes if you would like your newsletter delivered by post.
Please send all contributions for the Newsletter by mid-day on the 2nd Wednesday in the month to the Editor: Alan Reeve, Ravenscroft, Dinton Road, Fovant, Salisbury. Phone 01722 714907 or by email to: alanreeve.u3a@virgin.net
