SARUM ANNUAL REPORT

Sarum has had another excellent year with a membership reaching 263. We are most grateful to our Secretary, Phyll Mullins, whose enthusiasm for U3A has encouraged many a tentative inquirer to join us. The way she has acquired her computer skills is a fine example of U3A - help from friends and a lot of persistence has enabled her to achieve unexpected goals, such as databases for the National Office. Each member now receives the U3A News in the post.
Anne Marie Seacroft did a magnificent job of organizing and administering a programme of 40 courses, covering a wide range of interests. Our U3A would not exist without a loyal band of Group Leaders, many carrying on over a number of years. Even self-help groups need a Leader and we are grateful to them all. We welcome Jean Lunnon who took over as Course Organizer in January.

Unfortunately some of our members are unable to attend Wednesday Coffee Mornings as shown by our questionnaire, but the many advantages of St. Francis Hall mean we shall remain there for the foreseeable future. Those who have attended have heard some splendid talks, thanks to Ena Baldock our Speakers' Secretary. Looking after U3A equipment can be a chore but John Winders makes no fuss about carrying the complicated PA speakers and mikes to and fro, and setting them up to make our listening more comfortable. Mary Cole has faithfully led a team of coffee makers to provide a welcome drink. Peter and Joan Tee have willingly taken up their former task of delivering the monthly Newsletter. Lucy Smithson has a stall for free exchange of books. From January Bill Willson has been responsible for arranging the chairs as the Church caretaker has retired. Bill has religiously put a copy in the library's U3A File, and sent reports of Coffee Mornings to the Salisbury Journal. As it is free it is published only when the editor finds the space.

Peter Tee arranged an outing to London in the autumn but we have relied on Clare Edwards' link with Salisbury U3A for the opportunity to visit a variety of places and theatres. Bob Adcock has continued to arrange the popular Sunday lunches for members to meet at a different venue once a month.

Although we are all volunteers none of this can happen without funds to cover expenses. Bryan Griffiths took on the task of Treasurer and has steered us safely through the year. Unfortunately the bid to the Lottery for digital projector and laptop was refused twice, but a further attempt will be made, perhaps jointly with the other two U3As.

Jean Lunnon, Course Organizer, would welcome more suggestions for new courses and offers to lead them. Please ring her if you are interested in leading/co-ordinating one of the following:

English Literature (this could be a mutual interest group with various members offering venues and leading), or perhaps
European Literature?
The groups could be monthly, fortnightly or weekly, initially of limited duration, and start in autumn 2003 or spring 2004. Support with resources is on offer. Please remember that courses will only exist if members are willing to run them!
