Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of Sarum U3A will take place at St Francis’ Church Hall, Beatrice Road, Salisbury at 10.30 am on Wednesday 17 March 2009 where all members of Sarum U3A are invited to attend.
If you would like to assist us and serve on the Committee you can obtain a nomination form from the Secretary, Mrs G Hinton, Moonrakers, 83 Netherhampton Road, Salisbury SP2 8NA, tel: 01722 325353.  Nominations must be received by the Secretary at least 7 days before the meeting.
The Executive Committee of Sarum U3A will propose an increase in the annual subscription to £13 per person or £25 for two people at the same address, to be effective for 2011 membership.  There will be an open debate and vote on this proposal.
Any other proposals or motions affecting the constitution or management of the U3A must be received in writing by the Secretary at the above address at least 21 days before the meeting.
Following the AGM, there will be a U3A video presentation about ‘Learning Through Experience’ and then some study group members will talk briefly about their group and what they have achieved.  After the meeting there will be a buffet lunch (by separate invitation) for Group Leaders and helpers in recognition of their services over the past year.

Groups

New Groups for 2010-2011
I know it is the middle of winter but I am starting to plan for next year! Our new members are eager to become fully involved and we need more groups.  Please think about running a group – I have really enjoyed my first experience as a group leader.  Do you have a skill or expertise you would be willing to share?
Perhaps there is a subject you have always wanted to know more about and now you have the time to do a bit of research as a group and make friends at the same time.
Maybe you could look at the range of courses on the www.u3aonline.org.au website.  Our philosophy course runs for 9 sessions and materials are supplied.  We just take turns to present the sessions.
If you have an idea, please phone me and have a chat about it.  The committee are all happy to offer help and advice.  Remember – volunteering is the lifeblood of U3A.

Using Your Camera
Sheila & Peter Read will be holding classes on photography every four weeks during the summer.  To sign up – phone them on 01722 501218.  Members should bring the instructions for their camera and fully charged batteries.  The classes will start by making sure you know how your camera works. The class will go out around Salisbury to get hands-on tuition in different conditions. The first session and wet weather sessions will be at 12 Chiselbury Grove, Harnham, SP2 8EP. Classes start on 29 March and continue until August.

Recorder Playing for Fun & Improvement
This is a new group meeting at 2.00 pm on Wednesdays monthly. Details on the U3A website under “Spire”.  Players welcome – any standard. Call Stuart Robson on 01722 334310. Next meetings on 17 February, 17 March and 28 April.

Walking Group

Meet at the Village Hall Car Park at Ebbesbourne Wake at latest 9.45 am for a 5-mile walk.  Lunch at The Horseshoe Inn.

New Year Party 2010
A good audience of members were present and waited with barely concealed anticipation for the entertainments to begin.
The producer and Master of Ceremonies, Gordon Pardy, welcomed everyone and introduced the programme of events.
The first item was well received by the audience:  a short humorous and apt sketch of village life.  Phyl Mullins wrote and starred accompanied by Pat Watkinson and Clare Edwards.
Neil Russell followed reading a Denis Norden anecdote and taking a funny look at the English language.
Then came the Sarum U3A Players performing their pantomime, Snow White & Some Dwarfs (in fact 2 dwarfs) played by Maureen and Gordon Pardy. It must be said that Gordon was not a very dwarf dwarf!  Neil Russell was Narrator with Jenny Mawer, Tony Munday, Clare Edwards and Ena Baldock enthusiastically playing Snow White, Prince Charming, the Mirror and the Wicked Stepmother respectively. It is difficult to say who played the two ends of the horse – but it is believed to have been Phyl Mullins and Pat Watkinson, although we did not see them.  The pantomime, especially the unscripted moments, was much enjoyed by everyone.

Finally, the Salisbury U3A Choir entertained us with several songs, most of which were familiar to the audience. The choir provided a very enjoyable and fitting end to the entertainment.
The MC thanked the participants for their contributions and hard work. The audience had clearly enjoyed themselves and showed their appreciation.
Everyone then tucked into a wonderful buffet lunch arranged by Marilyn Beattie and her excellent helpers. Joan and Peter Tee did sterling work in running the bar.
