From the Chairman

Once again I must thank all the members who helped to make the New Year’s party a success. It was different this year but I think most of those who came had a good time. Now we are planning for the AGM in March. We have had a successful year with many of you, if not all, enjoying group activities to the full. The groups are not only about discovering new things but are also for us to make new friends. This is one purpose for all our U3A activities. We now have a great many new members joining us and I hope that they will be able to find friendship among us. Please make them welcome and make sure they do not feel left out. At the A.G.M. there will be tables laid out by the groups showing what they have been doing this year, please make a point of visiting all the tables, you may find a new interest for next year.

A great many of you will know by now that Roger and I are moving to Norfolk in April. Our son and his wife have moved there with their young children and it is quite a long journey to visit them regularly, so we are moving to Holt.  We shall miss you all but I hope to be able to join a U3A there.  I am sure Sarum U3A will continue to flourish.

Groups Organiser

Jean writes: I have done the job of Groups Organiser for over five years now, very happily, but it is time for a change. As usual, it would be best to have a ‘shadowing’ period this year so that the new Organiser can become familiar with the tasks of  contacting current and potential Group Leaders, putting together a programme and sorting members into the various groups. It is a very sociable and interesting job, with much support from the Committee, Group Leaders and members and can mostly be done at times which suit you. Basic computing skills are required, and an ability to use a simple database, but not necessarily to set one up. If anyone thinks they might be interested, please contact me on 335909 for an initial chat.

AGM/ Exhibition

On Wednesday 19 March we shall once again have an exhibition of our group activities, before and after the AGM. This is much enjoyed by all. Would any group which wishes to display material or a poster please set up a table or board by 10 a.m. – each group is responsible for its own display.  To allow more room for exhibits, the chair lay-out for the AGM will be compressed until just before the start of the meeting.

Woodworking Poem (abridged)

Dear Alan we thank you for the interest we’ve found
When wood becomes shaped by our untutored hands
And sawdust and woodchips lie scattered around
A beautiful vision before us soon stands

The woodcarving group meets on a Tuesday
In garage outside Salisbury
Novices and seasoned carvers
None of us would be barbers
We do our best to please our tutor
Some finished items are hilarious
But most of them are deadly serious
A horse, a rabbit or rhinoceros
These are beyond the skills of most of us

We’re off to woodwork- what a laugh
For those of us just at the start
We humbly listen to the rest
And Alan helps us do our best

He has the patience of a saint
With us the experts we just ain’t
The others produce things so fine
Our objects don’t begin to line
