I am writing this having just arrived home from a return trip to the Antarctic.  This time our ship managed to cross, and go further south than, the Antarctic Circle – the farthest south any ship had managed this season.  A most stimulating trip but the effects of Climate Change were depressingly clear.
But now back to life in Salisbury.  Our 13^th Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 21^st March at 10.30 am which, of course, includes the election of officers and committee members.  I should like to thank all the existing members of the committee who have given their time to work for the smooth running of Sarum U3A over the past year.

An especially big thank you goes to our present Treasurer, Bryan Griffiths, who has served us so well over the past 6 years but has now decided to hand over to someone else.

We can always do with more help so further nominations are welcome.  They should be seconded, have the agreement of the nominee and be sent to Clare Edwards at 6 Merrifield Road, Ford, Salisbury, SP4 6DF to arrive no later than 7 days before the AGM.  Nomination forms will be available at the Coffee Morning.

 

On Wednesday 21^st March we shall, as usual, combine the AGM with an Exhibition about the activities of our groups and the talents of individual members. Would all groups please try to bring along exhibition material or posters and set up a table or board by 10 am. After the AGM there will be a lunch for our gallant Group Leaders and members of the Committee.

 

Jean Lunnon writes: Planning for next season’s programme, beginning in September 2007, will soon be underway. The U3A is all about contributing and sharing skills, so if you would like to share a skill, an area of knowledge or quite simply an interest with a few other members, please let me know as soon as possible. Groups can be monthly, fortnightly or weekly for one, two or three terms and venues can be varied. It is good to have some fresh ideas, but remember that we depend entirely on volunteer leaders or coordinators, so, no volunteer, no group! Ring me on 01722 335909 to have a chat about possible ideas.

Sarum U3A Annual General Meeting and Exhibition of Group Activities and Work.

Please note that the Exhibition opens at 10.00 am and the AGM follows at 10.30 am.

WINE APPRECIATION

There are some vacancies in this group.  It meets on the 4^th Wednesday of the month in the afternoon.  If you are interested, please contact Peter Tee on 01722 322018.

WALKING

Thursday 22^nd February

We will meet at “The Fox and Goose”, Coombe Bissett at 10.00 am, for a 6½-mile walk to Great Yews.  Could be very muddy, so a walking stick would be useful.  If you intend to join this walk, please ring Thelma Jay on 01722 501856 on Monday 19^th or Tuesday 20^th.

WATERCOLOUR PAINTING

There is one vacancy in the Watercolour Group on Monday afternoons.  If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Alan Wood on 01722 328474. 

SPIRE U3A  DRAMA GROUP

There are a few vacancies in this Spire U3A group, which gets together on third Tuesday afternoons in central Salisbury to read a variety of plays (not Shakespeare). If you are interested, please ring Beryl on 333846.

 

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Monday 26^th February at Harnham Memorial Hall at 10.30am.

Subject: Structure, Bonding and the Periodic Table. 

Speaker: Phil Copley

The ways that atoms bond, how this is determined by their position in the Periodic Table and the types of structure that result. It will also touch on the properties exhibited by different structural types via simple demonstrations. Atomic models will be used throughout.
