My first and very pleasant
task, while I am standing in for Josephine, is to wish you all a very happy 2007. I am sure
we would like to wish Josephine a wonderful trip and look forward to her safe return at the end of
March.
May I remind you that annual subscriptions are due by January 31st? If you have
not already done so please remember to contact Phyl Mullins before then.
No doubt we have all been saddened to hear of the death of Lydia Dungate. During her time as editor of our Sarum U3A Newsletter she kept everyone of us in touch all of our activities. I am sure you would like me here to express our appreciation for this work and send our condolences to her family. Jennie Mawer
Committee Elections 2007
Would you like to come on to the Committee or perhaps you know someone who would make an excellent Committee member? Nomination forms will be available at the February Coffee Morning. Please don’t forget to ask your nominee before putting their name forward.
Membership
At the time of writing, 205 members have renewed their subscriptions from a total membership of 299. 15 members have left our U3A and there are 20 people waiting to join us in 2007.
In addition, Phyl Mullins asks all members who have not renewed their membership to do so before the end of January. Please note that renewals should be paid by cheque, and made payable to: Sarum U3A. In addition, please don’t forget to send a stamp-addressed envelope with your renewal form.
Groups
Walking
Thursday 25th January
Meet at the “Yew Tree”, Odstock at 10.00 am for a 5½ mile walk to Clearbury Rings. If you intend to join this walk, please ring Mary Compton on 01722 336609 on Monday 22nd or Tuesday 23rd.
Mary Compton also writes:
I am wanting volunteers to lead our walks in June, September and October. Six of our regular group leaders have left or are unable to commit themselves because of health problems. Perhaps, one of our U3A members, who is not a member of the Walking Group, would be prepared to lead us on a walk in their home area. The only stipulation is that we must start and finish at the same pub (the sugar on the pill!).
Coffee Mornings
Wednesday 21st February
David Parrott will give us a talk about Tante Winnie – a lesbian lover who had a French connection with Salisbury. David’s talk will be illustrated with slides and music.
The Joint Salisbury U3A’s Health Care Research Group
Friday 16th February at 2.00 pm at the Harnham Memorial Hall.
The speaker will be Jenny Burns of the Speech and Language Therapy Department of Salisbury District Hospital (SDH). Jenny was winner of the 2006 SDH award for patient/patient involvement. She will talk about the way she uses a range of views and experiences to develop speech and language services for stroke patients at the hospital.
Future meetings
These will be held on April 20, July 6 and October 19, at 2.00 pm in Harnham Memorial Hall. All members of the three Salisbury U3As are welcome to attend. Speakers for these meetings will be arranged later, so as to reflect matters of public interest at the time.
2006 Pharmacy Project
The end of 2006 saw the completion of the Group’s research into the Salisbury District Hospital’s Pharmacy Department. Part of the research included a survey involving interviewing more than 120 patients.
One of the high points of 2006 was the Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust showing its appreciation of the group’s work by inviting its leader, Eric Gould, and his wife to be presented to The Princess Royal when she opened the new wing at SDH in September.
Joint U3A Outings & Visits

VISIT TO PLAYHOUSE THEATRE, SALISBURY
For a matinee performance of SHADOWLANDS by William Nicholson. This is a major drama production based on the real life story of C S Lewis and his relationship with Joy Davidmann. We have secured centre stall tickets for this moving drama.
Performance starts at 2.30 pm. Cost £10.00.

BIZET’S CARMEN
A WNO co-production with Scottish Opera at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton. Sung in French with surtitles. We have centre stalls seats with surtitle views for a 7.15 pm performance.

2-DAY LONDON VISIT. For South Kensington Museums, a West End Show and to attend a full dress rehearsal at the Royal Hospital Chelsea for its Founder's Day Celebrations, with lunch at the adjacent National Army Museum. Negotiations should be finalised very soon. Do keep the dates free and await further details.

VISIT TO TYNTESFIELD (National Trust)
Described as an extra-ordinary Gothic Revival extravaganza. Tyntesfield is a much sought-after venue for groups.
