Salisbury U3A Press
Report
August 2006
At the August meeting of the Salisbury U3A the chairman thanked the editor of the newsletter, James Mogford, for his work, and the course organiser, Christine Dickson, for the tremendous task she had performed in allocating courses to our 500 members. Jack Leeming also asked for a volunteer to help take the entrance money. The outings on September 20 to a mystery destination, and on October 18 to Exeter can be booked now. The Mayflower visit to see La Boheme on November 29 and the visit to Black Watch at Southampton may be booked in September. If you are interested in a three-day visit to Amsterdam or Barcelona in April 2007, please let John Ewington know. Phil Groombridge of the Wildlife Rescue gave a fascinating account of his work. He had a heart attack 12 years ago, and was recovering quietly, sitting in the Elizabeth Gardens by the river, when a swan came up to him and laid her head on his lap. Next day it came again, and he saw that he could help injured swans. He and his team now get 70 to 80 calls a day, from the public, the police, and RSPB, wanting help for injured animals. He has had deer, polecats, owls, snakes, squirrels and badgers, as well as swans. The team visit terminally ill patients in hospital, letting them touch owls, and visit schools to educate the children on care of wild animals. The animal hospital is too small for their needs, and they are building a new one out at Winterslow. They do not receive any grants, and rely on sales at the bric-a-brac shop in Fisherton Street, and car boot sales to earn the money to feed the animals. There will be a big collection day on Saturday 23rd September in the Maltings. Please support them. Other wildlife rescue places can be found by clicking here |
