Salisbury & District U3A Press Report
July 2007
New members could not help but notice that a programme of outings is a popular feature of U3A. It was reported that the June day trip to Tyntesfield House (an acclaimed National Trust property) and Bath had been a great success. Future trips include a visit to Lulwoth Castle, already oversubscribed, and to Oxford. For music lovers, tickets have been booked for performances by the English National Opera at Southampton. Theatre visits to Salisbury Playhouse are also part of the programme. To enhance the enjoyment of the plays, there is an opportunity to join a group to discuss them afterwards. And already, over 30 members have booked for a cruise next May to the Norwegian fjords. |

| The guest speaker, Group
Captain Alan
Hotchkiss, gave an eye-opening illustrated talk on the Berlin airlift
of 1948 – 49. He spoke with the animated authority
of a personal participant. For as a young RAF pilot he flew
on many missions in the airlift. His overview of the
political disagreements between the Soviet Union and the three western
occupying powers in post-war Germany which led to the blockade of West
Berlin brought back memories of the Cold War. He described the meticulous planning and aircraft deployment in the airlift that saved the population of West Berlin from starvation, and so brought alive to his listeners what has been acknowledged as the most outstanding operation in the history of aviation. |
