Salisbury & District U3A Press Report
May 2008
At the heart of any U3A group are the regular small gatherings of people who wish to improve their foreign language skills, take up new sports and hobbies, discuss literature and current events, make music, go rambling…. Members with particular skills and interests share their knowledge and enthusiasm, so that all may learn something fresh, enjoy the company of like-minded people and make new friends. The more activities members offer, the greater the choice of courses. So it was appropriate that at the April monthly general meeting, several members spoke about a few of the groups they will be offering to facilitate this autumn. These include activities that have been in the programme for many years - the choir and Bible study group. We also heard about some being offered for the first time – such as making greeting cards, critical Christianity (a forum to question some Christian teachings), and exploring the solar system, the latter requiring broadband internet access. Among continuing courses are two approaches to improving German language skills, and several literature groups in English and French. This year bridge tuition will also be on offer, a topic that hasn’t been available for some time. A wealth of opportunities for those who have entered the 'Third Age', having retired from full-time work and family responsibilities! All that is required is that everyone should participate actively in any group they sign up for. Refreshments at the monthly meetings are going over to Fairtrade – coffee, tea, sugar and biscuits. |
| Secretary’s Notes for
May 2008 Central I can take orders for another six 2009 U3A diaries. The price is £1.90 including postage. Please record your name on my list. I have ordered 10. Moira Dickson and Chris Dickson have attended a local Regional Meeting. I am sure they can offer comments if requested. We have received a mammoth questionnaire from the Dept of Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) via U3A Central. U3A Central have simplified this and Moira with a little help from me has completed this version. It relates to informal adult learning. I have placed a copy of our reply with the original questions in the file marked “Information on Central U3A Activities” at the rear of the hall. I have received a free sample of a U3A publication “Computer Basics for Seniors” This is available from Central Office at £6 including basics. See copy and covering letter with the “U3A Central Activities” file. It looks like a useful book for those with limited IT knowledge. |
