Salisbury & District U3A Press Report

March 2007

The March meeting began with the AGM.  Jack Leeming remains Chairman, Neville Jennings retires as Secretary, and Mike Limbrick takes his place. David Wilson retires as Treasurer, and Tony Rea takes over. Four new members were elected to the Committee, Sue Kenway, Tony Rea, Marian Sewell and Anne-Marie Seacroft.

After presenting his accounts, the Treasurer said that there are now more than 500 members. Subscriptions remain at the same rate for next year. A new independent assessor is needed to audit the accounts.

James Mogford needs copy for the next newsletter before March 15.

Chris Dickson continues as group co-ordinator, and asked for new members to offer courses. U3A is a self-help organisation, and we are urged to pass on our experience and enthusiasm.

John Ewington gave details of forthcoming outings, details of which can be found under Outings News.

Ivan Raynsford Smith gave a very interesting, lucid account of the Middle Eastern political situation. The opposing groups of Islam and Muslim, Sunni and Shia create violence. The discovery of oil, the Arab uprising against the Turks, and the Jews claiming land in Palestine have all added to the volatile mix. Under Saddam Hussein Baghdad was crime free. Now there is torture and killing, and girls are forced to wear the veil. He concluded by saying that there will be no possibility of peace until all parties sit down and talk.
