From the Chairman

September was “Back to School” so by now you may have learned something new on one of our courses, or gone on one of John Ewington’s wonderful outings. There is such a large choice of courses to take, and some days it seems as if there isn’t enough time to do everything.  How did we ever manage to hold down responsible posts and bring up families?  Nowadays we probably take more time to do our daily chores and we certainly like to meet friends for coffee or lunch.  That is one of the perks of being retired.  Old friends are very important and we need to keep in touch by letter, telephone, or e-mail.  We are especially conscious of this, having recently suffered a family bereavement.  It was such a pleasure and comfort to meet old friends at the funeral, and we vowed to contact them more often.

The committee is sad to report the death of Fred Barlow, who printed and did the layout of the newsletter for many years.  He also ran a popular course in Lesser Known Operas for several years.

We are grateful to all our tutors and leaders of courses, who we know gain much enjoyment from their students.  Do think about offering your services to Chris Dickson, our Course Organiser, who has recently had her name entered on the U3A National Roll of Honour for her services to U3A.
The Anniversary Lunch went well and was enjoyed by all who attended.  The food was delicious, pretty flower arrangements on the tables by Marion Bryan, and the Choir and Ann Acton’s group performed splendidly.  Parking was difficult, due to the Church double-booking the space, but that will be rectified in future.

It only remains for me to wish you all a Merry Christmas with family and friends, and a happy and healthy New Year.
Moira Dickson
