After I
had a knee replacement, I had to learn patience, tolerance and endurance – and that was just
for my husband’s cooking. All the things I took for granted were tossed aside: walking,
driving, sitting or standing for any length of time. However, I am now nearly back to normal.
What I did discover was that friends are really important, not only for companionship and news from
outside, but for practical reasons, such as bringing books, knitting patterns and wool, and general
encouragement. We can all make new friends at any stage in our lives, but those made at our age
are extremely important. If you live alone, make an effort to join a large group and take advantage
of the opportunities offered to us in the U3A. To that end I recommend the Sunday lunch
after each monthly meeting. This is organised by Barbara Coulson (710597) and Jean Seabrook
(710367). If you would like to have a good meal in convivial company, please telephone either
one in advance to book a place. The next lunch is on 11 January at the Grasmere House Hotel
and should cost £8.95.
I wish you all a happy, busy time at Christmas and New Year with family, grandchildren and friends. I
save my used postage stamps for Naomi House Children’s Hospice and should be grateful for any
you pass on to me.

Agenda
Please note that only fully paid-up members are permitted to attend. All members should ensure that they have renewed their membership by the end of February 2009.
It would be helpful if items for AOB could be submitted to the Secretary by 18 February 2009.
I have been involved in a situation where a U3A member took photographs of a non-member’s property
but with her permission. Unfortunately the pictures were then posted on a website without the
property owner’s permission. This resulted in the owner contacting me to ask for the removal
of the pictures from the website. This was done and a letter of apology sent by me to the individual
concerned.
The lesson is that we all need to take care about how we use photographs and in particular digital
images which are easy to send to others and place on websites.
Michael Limbrick, Hon. Secretary.
