ARCHAEOLOGY

29th AUGUST 2006

Anne Boutell organised a coach for members to travel to Danebury Ring near Stockbridge. We were priveledged to have Nick Griffiths to explain about the Ring and tell us that the Iron Age Fort is the most studied and excavated in the country. He showed us a map of Prof Barry Cunliffe's results and this inducated that this ring was used as a huge 18 acre granary. Nick then explained that other Iron Age Hill forts in the region served different purposes such as Bury Hill where evidence of metal working has been found. Nick also pointed out the cunning defensive entrance to the ring and how much more difficult it was in its heyday with vertical walls in a narrow defile to contend with.

Then we travelled to Andover Iron Age Museum where some of the actual finds are displayed plus many others from different rings.
